I was gifted a bag of of corms three years ago; they look like yours. I had to dig mine up today because they are planted where we are putting a fence in. The corms grow on top of each other and form a chain which you pull apart to transplant. I was told to use rose tone fertilize and I can tell you that makes a huge difference! The hummingbirds love these flowers…I have hummingbird feeders but they prefer these flowers over the feeders!

Bought some of these 3 years ago (I live in middle/southern Michigan. Was told they probably wouldn't come back after the one season because they were the lucifer type. Turns out, they took and they've started to multiply. If you're in Michigan, plant those suckers in full sun with evening shade and either mulch or something similar around the base to insulate the flower for the winter

I planted 20 bulbs late spring. Most survived. Strange, the sword like leaves splayed out, but also something else grew right almost on top of each plant. Whatever it is has variggated leaves and did not bloom. I don't know what that is, if I should cut it off or not. We have had a warm fall and early winter in TX. My plants are growing like it was spring. thank you

Try Lucifer. They would be later to pop out of the soil for you. Possibly mid June... depending on the winter. I'm in zone 6b and they were one of the last things to start growing... I thought they were dead. I'm getting wise to them now.

@@katethegardener my corms also didn't bloom the first year if i remember correctly... unless i planted them after they flowered... being that you are zone 5 on the borderline of their hardiness you might have to either cover them or lift them like you would a Gladiola

Sounds like you and I planted for the first time together 😁 Zone5🇨🇦 first year it didn't flower, this year was amazing. I got Lucifer and Saffron Fire (orangy/peach) corms from Veseys but only the Lucifer came up (looks just like yours). Don't know what happened? After next growing season I'll be digging up to seperate the corms as they grow stacked on top of each other and pushes them upward out of the ground. Loved this video.
@PlantzNThings

Oh that's interesting that they grow stacked on top of one another... I wonder if that's a reason why it's suggested to divide and replant every 3 or 4 years... the corms might meet the surface... I love that we are growing them at the same time... I wonder if the other variety you planted didn't come back because it's Z6... if you try again maybe lift some over winter

My Lucifer grew great for a couple of years. Didn't bloom after 3 years and needed division. It was never invasive in my zone 5b garden. Unfortunately it never survived this harsh winter.
@emptynestgardens9057

This confirms for me that after this 3rd winter mine will be dug up divided and lowered back into ground. I'm also going to heavily mulch for this winter as the corms on the top of the stack near the soil surface probably won't make it otherwise.

We also call them montbretia, they grow in our grasslands quite freely in South Africa. Our sunbirds here love them. In South Africa they die back in winter with all the frost. Some indigenous varieties grow tall as I am. The bulbs multiply beautifully too.
