"Oliver Cromwell ruled the nation as Lord Protector for five years. In that short time he rose England to be a great power feared and respected throughout the world. Under his hand was laid the foundation of a truly democratic nation. In 1658 he died. Three years later Charles the Prince of Wales was crowned king and a monarch sat once more upon the throne of England, but an England never to be the same again..."

Rejoice in the Lord. Rejoice in the Lord. He hath put down the mighty from their seat. He hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things, but sent the rich away empty. Rejoice in the Lord. He girded me with strength of war, And teacheth my hands to fight. To bind their kings in chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron. I shall clothe his enemies with shame, shame, shame, shame. So that his crown flourishes. Rejoice in the Lord. His mercy endureth forever.

A fantastic request! Frank Cordell, a name that one doesnt hear often or in general, when it comes to film music, is certainly worth to talk about! Starting and performing his life long as Jazz-pianist and orchestra leader, he obviously is a brilliant composer of film music and really brings some depth to films such as Cromwell and Khartoum. But judge yourself!

@@particleboy3584 Alec Guinness was remarkably good as Charles I. There was a few little issues with how he played Charles, but overall it's fairly solid performance. The BBC made a drama series in 1984 called By the Sword Divided which was about the English Civil War and two families from either side of the divide. It's worth having a watch of it. I think you can find it on You Tube. Cromwell had solid production design as well. But it wasn't fully accurate to the historical story.

I've only seen this movie once: on TV in the 1970's. "Cromwell" came in the same year as some other popular movies were released: "Waterloo" was one. Both of those had a good cast. Richard Harris did a fine job in this movie - "Cromwell" as I remembered. As for the music...I like it! So "formal British" in classic history flavor. Also, dramatic to keep one attuned to the harmonic melody. Thanks, Fred!

Hello Toon Boy, I am very happy to read your requests, as they are wonderful choices! I have them all, as far as I know. In the case of the Friedhofer score, the original music was never published and seems to be lost. All that exists is the isolated music (and EFFECTS) track of the recent blu ray, but there are too many sound effects that one could enjoy the music.. However a true Friedhofer fan would be happy to hear the original music, anyway and maybe we should get to this gem, instead of the (however great) re-recording? Fred

I doubt it was synthesized. I recall hearing the same instrument in background music for television shows like Rawhide which was composed in the late 1950s.
