THANK YOU for mentioning observation, since it's such an important thing and literally no one talks about it, even less about training your observation skills. One thing that worked for me to practice observation is when I was bored or outside without much to do, I looked at something and forced (in the beginning) myself to list at least 10 things about what I was watching, no matter how simple the object was, then when noticing something new ask yourself why is that way, or how is it and keep that game of asking and answer. I remember doing this for the first time with a tree and a trashcan, went home thinking how could I live my entire life looking at trees and trashcans but never OBSERVED them. Not to mention I never forgot what I learned that day. Awesome video, keep the good work.

observation is insanely good for improving. when i sit in my school bored, i observe my teacher or other student and see theri clothing folds, the clothing style itself and hard stuff like very side view head or behind the back. when i see someone muscular, i ask them and i will touch the muscles and try to feel the form. its kinda awkward and weird if u just stare at someone deeply XD but it really helps.

I think this concept also applies to, within drawing, drawing in a lot of different styles. Cartooning and fine art portraiture are incredibly different but you can learn a lot from both of them as an artist

It's like cross training in sports.. working out in the gym assists your game in basketball.. etc etc.. its definitely good to be well rounded. Having some structure to your learning / training also does help.. as well as focus on the things that matter. All things compliment each other but its also possible to become unfocused and never advancing in any particular thing. I suppose having a clear goal and using the cross training / discipline method to reach it would be the golden nugget.

I think animals, insects and plants are a huge source of inspiration, especially if you are into fantasy genre. Also photos of different parts of the world, urban distribution and architecture. Collaging your own artwork can be a great way to see different compositions (cutting with scissors in traditional, it's easier in digital). Using an already existing character from a song, book or myth is good for improving in character design. I find really hard to imagine rich stories, and this helps me a lot.

For me working out has actually helped me learn anatomy by seeing my own muscles in motion while looking at a mirror. I mostly learned from observation and I didn't even realize my anatomy was getting better till I was subconsciously drawing the muscle definition of the characters I drew.

observation one is hugely relatable for me. i think its the most important too. its insane how much i improved from observation than just studying references or 2d photos. real shit is more hands on and more available. its seriously huge in any artform. this video is insanely helpful for anyone who wants to get pro. some of these like ink, observation, painting are insanely helpful, more so than actually studying the fundamentals (u still need to though). sycra is really good and probably the only channel that can help u with almost everything.

i feel like since art imitates life, and life imitates art it's necessary for a good artist to actually live... and that lived experience will translate into the image (or whatever the form of art is)... that can mainly come in the form of observation or different experiences made in life. Even if all that happens subconsciously, it's like the ability to convey a subconscious dream everyone has been dreaming I like every one of your suggestions! So happy you're back with this much content

The observation thing is so tru. I just started doing it after watching this vid and it is a lot more helpful than only drawing stuff. I think its cause you might think doing things that are easy wont really help. and its easier to just observe something than draw it

I definitely agree with everything in this video yet again. Something else that actually helps with drawing though is acting. It’s basically a combination of what animation and writing have to offer, but from an even more personally point-of-view, as it really forces you to get inside a character’s shoes. It teaches you things like how they would likely carry themselves, or the way they speak, which can really translate into an illustration. It helps put things into action, since things are happening right in front of you, after all, letting you get a feel for what would make the most sense. I’m trying to make my own comic series and pursue voice acting at the same time, so I’ve got some first-hand experience with this, haha.

I'm still not much of an artist, though I'm trying more these days (I don't want a career in art, but art has always been a really important part of my life). Thanks for guiding my artistic abilities all these years, and teaching me so many new things!! I'm eternally grateful to you. You honestly made a lot of difference in my life. Also with traditionally painting it really forces you to understand color. You don't have 3 sliders or a color wheel anymore. And you could follow premade color pallets, but understanding how and why color mixing actually works is important. How green or orange can colors in the real world get if you don't have a slider telling you you're at max. In a paint shop their might be 100+ colors to pick from, how do you know which are worth having. And there isn't a color picker, if you put a color down and you run out of it on your pallet it has to get remade. When you have to mix a color many times it makes it easier to see that color.

The point you made with eraser is the reason people recommend ink/pen. The idea is to do iteration with pen rather than getting stuck trying to nail the arms when the whole figure is wrong. The fail faster concept. Maybe give it another go, but if you already get that iteration from something else I guess it's doesn't really matter. Still though, good video.

Hey Sycra! This isn't related to the current video but I have a question for you. Every year since you released it I come back and watch your iterative drawing video. I love that video, it's helped me so much. I do find myself running into a problem. When doing iterative practice sometimes I reach a point where I get 'stuck'. I'm maybe five iterations in and I can't think of any way to make what I'm working on better, even when I compare to references. I consider myself pretty good at critical analysis of art, but sometimes i feel like I reach a point with one thing and I just can't make it better. It looks good! This should make me happy, right? But i find myself dissatisfied because I didn't get very much "mileage" (as you say) so i know it won't stick very well. But i also don't want to keep going because if I'm not making more changes I'll get bored and that is death for my artistic motivation. I also know that if i leave it there I'll come back to it in less than a few weeks thinking it's awful and trying again but not making much more progress. This doesn't happen with everything, just sometimes. Have you dealt with this? Do you have any recommendations to get past this snag? I love your channel. I've been subscribed over various accounts throughout the years. Thank you for everything you do for the art community.

I enjoy watching your videos once in a while and this video was alright if a bit basic, but it could be _so_ much better without all the uh-ing. In a social situation, _especially_ when presenting, uh-ing is a sign of uncertainty. That you have to stop and give yourself time to think, and the more you do it the more time you're trying to give yourself and the more uncertain you become to others. It is one of the things schools tries to learn people away from and instead just be quiet, but most people default to uh-ing naturally to give a social que that you're not done and you're just thinking but it doesn't translate to when you're presenting things. Doing things live in-person is difficult, you're nervous and things don't work as they should because things become hard to convey and you need more time to think about _how_ to say something rather than actually talking and leading the conversation. _However_, just like redrawing something that looks off over and over again until it looks right, good or natural, you can do the same with a recording. Uh-ing a lot? Cut it out in editing. No fitting places to cut? Re-shoot the audio until it's right, just like redrawing. And one other thing. You can make your videos louder in editing or while recording. This video needed to be around 80 to 90% volume to listen to clearly without a headset.
