The initial diagram comparing the cross and dot products as using similar vs different components was interesting. The idea of voting and of important properties being due to differences was cool too. However, I don't feel this video gave me an intuitive understanding of how/why the cross product exists. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this video to answer the oft asked questions, "Yes, I can calculate it, but what is the cross product really? Why?"

Why cross product is in another dimension?
@Amine-gz7gq

because unlike dot product, we want to determine the uncommon parts between 2 vectors and they exist in orthogonal dimensions, we collect them and thus we have a vector and not a number like dot product. I can't explain this more accurately.

XYZXYZ approach for determining + and - was super helpful, thanks a ton!

and you dont even have to write it twice! you can think of XYZ as looping back to itself: YcrossZ = X. So long as Y is after X, Z after Y, X after Z

I loved the table, but after that the intuition seems to kinda go away. I mean, the 3d explanation is great and all, but I feel when I look at the table, that it doesn't makes sense why it has to be in 3D...

in calc 3 class i got introduced to the cross product. just curious, since i am working towards my comp sci degree, will the topics in calc be used in software engineering? thanks

Great question. I'd say that in general-purpose software engineering you don't directly use much calculus; discrete math and combinatorics come up more often. Calculus shows up in domain-specific areas, like a physics simulation or video game. A lot of the big ideas in Calculus change how you think about the world if you can internalize them.

Why is it that the correlation coefficient equals the sum of the off-diagonal elements (when standardized) divided by the normalizing factor, but the sign is always positive?

The first time I looked at the formula, it looked like someone picked random positive/negative signs. Now it makes so much more sense.
