The tie off hole is larger than the rest of the grommet holes most of the time. If they are all large the closest one will do fine. I don't use starting knots that often thought I use a starting clamp and wilson pro knot.

But what was the reason to begin with that you chose not to do a normal starting knot? (Double loop and tail from behind)

It worst look like the other knots.

Starting crosses only as it is hard to tighten this knot properly for a tie off

I think this video needs to be remade for 2021? Would you guys like to see that?

What would be the purpose of remaking the video? Is there something else you would like to see?

If the knot goes up into the grommet, nearly hidden , when pulling tension, is that an issue?

If you're pulling on the tail to tighten the knot you will break strings a lot. Pulling on a cross against a starting knot should not break a properly tied starting knot. If you're still having issues try using a starting clamp to start your crosses and tied off with a tie off knot.

Should I use this knot as a finishing knot on an old grommet?

I do it often. Make sure you hold the tail end of the string when releasing the clamp so the knot is not pulled into the grommet
