@darcyperkins7041
8 ай бұрын
It is easy to cross for the most part if everything is in order. However, you still have to go through an official border crossing. Even though it looks and IS fairly open, it is actually guarded. Granted, it is the longest international border in the world so some parts of it go through remote areas that are difficult to patrol but they do their best. There are videos on KZitem of people going to the border and saying that there's nothing there and that they can just walk across to the other side. To that, I say, "Try it and see what happens." Someone will come by to see what is happening. Technically, you're not supposed to cross over unless the road goes through the other country for brief periods as in some rural areas between Quebec and Vermont or situations involving certain buildings and homes. The border used to be even more relaxed but 9/11 changed everything. There is a story about a guy who lived in rural Quebec. He used to hunt; for sport and food, I assume. The road he traveled to get to and from his home to another place in Quebec, either the nearest village or the store or something, passed briefly into the US (Vermont). This was maybe around less than a mile of a ten-mile or so drive. On 1 occasion he was stopped by the police, likely the Vermont State Police. It was for a minor traffic or vehicle violation. He still had his guns in his truck as he had been hunting a few days before. He was not allowed to have them there and cross into the US even though the road did. In the past, they didn't do anything because they knew the locals and knew they were just going about their business and not a problem. After 9/11 they got tougher. Also, apparently they would send agents from other parts of the US who didn't know the area, the people or the situation so they would be tough on the people who had lived and worked in the area for many years, even generations and for whom this had never been a problem. This crackdown caused some resentment. Anyway, in this case, they arrested the guy. They first took him to the local jail. Then to a bigger one like in Montpelier or somewhere. Finally, because he had violated US federal law, he ended up in either Boston or New York City. He spent several weeks, maybe even a few months, there. I believe in the end he got a fine and probation, plus time served, if I remember correctly. This incident happened around 15 years ago and it has been several years since I read it so I don't remember the details. In my case, once I was with my cousin, our grandparents and 2 of my grandmother's siblings. We were travelling from near Ottawa to rural Quebec where they all lived. We passed through the far north of New York, which is quite rural, to avoid Montreal. Now there is a bypass, but this was the late 1970s and it wouldn't built for another 25 years. Somehow (maybe because the 3 siblings were bickering the whole 8 hour trip 😅) we crossed back into Canada without stopping! We got a few hundred feet in before we kids noticed and shouted to stop. We had to go back and report. We were 4 elderly people and 2 children aged around 11 or 12 years old so they were pretty relaxed about it. Also, the atmosphere was different then and we were crossing back into our own country.
