What do mediums do? Mediums are individuals who traverse between the world of the living and the dead. "Crossing over" means being able to walk the path to the underworld, starting from the entrance to the realm of the dead, which is believed to be the City God Temple in Taiwanese folk religion. In traditional Taiwanese ceremonies, there have always been experiences of journeying to the underworld, and "observing the falling yin" is one such practice. So, what is "observing the falling yin"? It generally refers to the method of a living person entering the realm of the dead, and there have been many successful cases of this in real life. In simple terms, it is the communication between ghosts and the living.
In this video, we introduce several different forms of crossing over. Mediums have many methods to enter the underworld, similar to observing the falling yin, to communicate with spirits or to visit their own "yuan chen palace" (a term for one's fate) and check the feng shui of their own grave in the underworld. These traditional underworld rituals have been passed down for many years in folk beliefs.
In some local traditional ceremonies, during the process of guiding the souls of the deceased, a priest will perform a special crossing over ritual, allowing the medium to enter the underworld through the entrance and reach the realm of the dead. The ceremony often involves preparing for the underworld journey, enabling the medium to arrive in the underworld. The video introduces a ceremony performed on the seventh day after a person's death, where an elder enters the underworld in a form similar to observing the falling yin, to visit the City God Temple or the spirits of deceased relatives in the underworld.
Some mediums are Taoist or Buddhist monks who, through spiritual practice, have attained the ability to open their third eye or reach a higher level of cultivation, granting them the ability to travel to the underworld. The video introduces a Taoist ritual of entering the underworld from the entrance to the realm of the dead to find the spirits of the deceased. This part provides a detailed introduction to the crossing over ceremony, describing how Taoists assist mediums in entering the underworld through the protection of the Vajra and successfully experience observing the falling yin through the process of the soul-guiding ceremony.
Some people possess supernatural powers, such as near-death experiences (NDEs). During NDEs, they often encounter underworld officials or judges who lead their souls to the path of the underworld and witness mysterious phenomena of the afterlife, often involving something similar to checking the "book of life and death." These records of paranormal events are no longer just folk tales but genuine scientific documentations.
Some individuals are chosen to be underworld officials due to their high moral standing and spiritual cultivation. For example, Zhang Taiyan, a prominent figure in the Republic of China era, recorded his experience of becoming an underworld judge while being held under house arrest by Yuan Shikai at Longquan Temple. He detailed his connection between the underworld and the living world, as well as the communication between ghosts and the living. These seemingly mythical stories are, in fact, genuine paranormal events showcasing supernatural powers.
