Flying from Buffalo is an option that a lot of us take. Smaller and easier that Toronto and usually cheaper. Also, you don't have to go through customs at the airport because you've already been through at the border so it's less complicated.

So happy that you’re able starting to do all the things you planned to do when you started this journey! I think the reason you didn’t have to declare anything going into the US is because you don’t live there. So if someone that lived in the US and went into Canada and came back, they would probably be asked by the US border agents then to declare the amount they spent :) great video!

They really have changed the procedure for PRs. Seems a lot better now that you can get an ESTA for road travel as it lasts for two years. Previously, pre plague, visitors from the UK had to get an I 94 and give their fingerprints when crossing into the US. We tried to get an ESTA when we had visitors from the UK and we were going to go to the US by ferry. When I tried the app, it kept asking what flight we were arriving on! I couldn't do it. They clarified later that the ferry was classified as a road crossing!

I actually went across the border with my family once and mistakenly took my old, expired Canadian passport with me instead of my new one. We were at the border when I realized this and thought for sure we’d be turned back. But surprisingly, the border agent let us into the American side. We don’t go out there that often, maybe once a year for dinner and maybe some shopping. Interesting to see your perspective on this.

Wow, that was SO MUCH FUN watching you live out a dream!! I was totally surprised that there are no longer Dunkin Donuts in Canada; they used to be everywhere but I guess they pulled out of the country. Who knew? :) Btw you should be able to easily get Diet Dr Pepper at Walmart in Canada. The standard Sweet Baby Ray's in Canada is 425 ml, which is smaller than the 532 ml American size, and in the US there are a few bigger sizes. You can order some "gallon" sizes of Sweet Baby Rays from Walmart Canada, but I don't see any in the original flavour. Do some research on Detroit before you cross over, to find out where to go. . I remember Detroit as being very run-down back in the day, but I have heard of Canadians who go to Detroit now and have fun weekends, but you should definitely research it all out first! I have a British friend who used to say it was cheaper to buy $US from his British pounds, but he was converting British pounds from Canadian dollars in his mind, which adds on one more exchange rate loss. I find international exchange rates to be pretty similar in most countries I've traveled to. Were you able to pick up on the Upstate New York accent when you crossed the border?

I'm not sure how that worked out that it cost less to buy that $100 US by taking it out of your UK account. $100 US CASH would cost me $127 Cdn. However, if I bought 82 pounds cash, it would cost $137 CDN ! Interesting!

It's difficult to compare 3 currencies like that, as we mentally compare conversion of Canadian dollars to Pounds, but that includes a currency conversion loss already.
@brentwoodbay
2 жыл бұрын
@@bobbbxxx I had a lot of difficulty with this one as it did involve three currencies, and I used to work in a bank! It seems as though it has to cost more to do it that way as as you say , every time you exchange currencies , you lose some. Of course there is also a difference between the 'buying ' rate and the 'selling' rate!
@bobbbxxx
2 жыл бұрын
@@brentwoodbay Yes, it is confusing, and kind of misleading if we stop to think first of a third currency that has been converted to Canadian dollars (and hence already paid the premium for conversion), and then compare the exchange to US funds with Pounds and Canadian dollars purchased with Pounds. As you say, every time you convert a currency, the bank makes a profit on it so you lose some money. I suppose if you are in Britain and do the same thing in reverse, comparing Pounds you have purchased from Canadian dollars, it would seem cheaper to buy US dollars with Canadian dollars, as there is only the one transaction fee paid.

Ah, this happened to me the first time I entered by land border crossing (except I was on my work permit and had a valid ESTA)! When I did it you needed an I-94 for the land border, and ESTAs were only for air and sea crossings. I learnt pretty quickly that only people who care about your PR card are Canadian border agents when you return, for everything else you need your passport. :)

I know it was stressful being the first time and all. So you have to take that into account. However, I live in Windsor which is a stones throw away from Detroit. I can literally hear the cars from the Detroit Grand Prix inside my home when it’s on. I’ve crossed the border many times. You will usually see an American or Canadian flag about half way on bridge. Indicating that you have crossed over into either or Country In the case of the tunnel in Windsor/Detroit. There is a line that goes up one side of the tunnel and down the other and has American flags on one side and Canadian on the other indicating which Country you are in. They likely didn’t get to ask you because they pulled you over after the first question. Which is always “citizenship?”However, they always ask you about produce. Fruits and vegetables especially at Niagara Falls. Not a big thing normally. However , if you are frugal and packed a lunch with fruit and vegetables in it. Don’t expect it to make it pass the border if they find it. Do not ever make the mistake of Lying to them. When I was 18 I was arrested. The charges were dismissed. Over 10 years later I got pulled over (they do it randomly sometimes. , don’t panic if you can’t think of a reason why you are being pulled over). I was asked by Officer if I had a criminal record to which I answered no. She then asked me if I had ever been arrested to which I said no. She then asked me again. At that point I honestly could not remember being arrested but didn’t think she was asking me to be silly. I finally remembered said yes I was arrested when I was 18 but that the charges had been dismissed. To which everything than became fine. Covid has additional concerns. New and special rules. However, that aside. My daughters mothers family are natives of Windsor. They cross the border every other month. It is not unusual for them to come back with hundreds of dollars in items. Good smugglers you think. Not really. They always have all their receipts. They tally all their receipts for what each person has spent in total and the total amount spent all together They hand over the receipts and give total and I think , they said they have been pulled aside once. They never get alcohol or tobacco. Finally a word of caution. All people are not created equal at the border. I was coming back one day from a retreat with Daughters mother. After spending a week in states. We got pulled over and my little beater came along side this nice brand new black sedan. Beautiful looking car. Had a nice looking family with twin boys in backseat. Mother , Father. Think the boys were pre-teen if I was to guess. They were there when I pulled in. And they were there when I left despite the fact that I had a locked briefcase in my trunk which they did not even ask me about. When We were leaving they were tearing apart this beautiful sedan. I do believe that this is not the norm. However this was pre-Obama. So. I don’t know. I was pulled over on American side. Just never make the mistake with these guys thinking you have rights. You don’t. You will hear it in the media , it has been drummed into them ever since 9/11. They are the last line of defence. Now don’t get me wrong. Have also had some very humorous / pleasant conversations with border officers. It does however sound like you and Jake got some real peaches thou. These guys no exactly what PR is. Let me give you one piece of advice. Cameras are beautiful things. However , until you get into the building. Then don’t record sound. Which is why you will often see then become more cooperative inside.

When crossing border back into Canada can claim goods equal to following limits duty free: If in US 24hrs or less = $200 but no alcohol or tobacco (unless you want to pay duty). If stay excceds 48hrs = $800 + tobacco & tobacco per allowed limits. I believe its one 24 of beer or 26oz bottle booze + carton of cigarettes (per person). You can obtain exemption amounts on Govt of Canada web site. Although you were not asked there are limits on what U can bring into US too. I know because I've been asked by US customs (if had anything to declare) when crossing border.

If it's less than 24 hrs , there is NO duty free allowance. BUT , if you've just been down for the day, and have a fistful of receipts and say you have $?? and that INCLUDES groceries, they tend to waive you through! I tried to post the link showing this but now KZitem deletes any post that has a link. It should accept a copy and paste . "Absence of less than 24 hours There are no personal exemptions for same-day cross-border shoppers"

Listening to your experiences and those in the comments of crossing into the States is mind numbing to me. Before 9/11 no passport or ESTAS whatever that is were ever needed whether .driving or flying into the U.S. Americans never needed passports either. If you were born in Canada there were 3 questions asked by the border guard where were you born where are you headed and how long do you intend to stay. When the U.S. demanded that Canadians have a passport to enter I got my first passport ever in my life. After having flown a dozen times and driven about 50 times (since I live in Southern Ontario) in my life, since I got my passport I have crossed the border once. Sorry but if any tells you the good old days weren't so great don't believe them. Crystal Beach and the giant amusement park there (now long gone) was a beautiful mix of Canadian and Americans. Louise you really should checkout the youtube vids to see what it once was. Having gone there now yourself won't believe it.
