While the political-media discourses focus on the "migration crisis", the policies linked to it or the news involving "immigrants" (especially Africans), in the second part of the documentary "Crossing the color line - healing from the past" Black Italians express themselves on these controversial issues.
Because they carry both a migratory background, and therefore a double inheritance, but also the "foreigner" stigma because of their phenotype in a country where national identity and "whiteness" are still inseparable in the collective imagination, the "Afro-Italians" - whose presence is still seen as abnormal - are often perceived as an unwanted minority that threatens the ethnic and cultural foundation of their country. Their Italianness is in fact often questioned and, just as their parents, they are seen as an exogenous presence, a group of people that must "integrate" and not "communitarise", or ''go back to Africa''.
Beyond the categories and theories, this documentary wants to give direct access to the stories, concerns and needs of a largely unknown minority, whose experience allows us to understand the national anchoring of global social movements such as afro-feminism or anti-racism, informing us at the same time on the specificities of the Italian context and its consequences on the trajectories of this youth.
In this documentary, past and present are intertwined through the experiences of the people interviewed and the historical excursus on both Italian and European colonial history, allowing us to understand not only how "the Other", "the racialized African", has been created over the centuries, but also how this stereotyped and often degrading imagery still structures common sense and individual experiences today.
Today, in a globalized world in which it is no longer possible to oppose a "We" to a "You" in an antagonistic way, it is urgent to understand the contemporary consequences of a collective past that has left a mark on the consciousness of both individuals and nations. A mark that distorts the relationship with oneself and with others and from which, even today, people still need to heal.
