Initially opened in 1911 as "The Hospital for the Negro Insane of Maryland," the facility would ultimately become known as "The Crownsville State Hospital." It would remain open all the way up until 2004, operating for a total of 93 years. At its height in 1955, it housed 2,719 patients in severely overcrowded, squalid conditions. This is its story.
