Oh Yeah she was! I got to go aboard when my own ship USS Ponce docked in Philly. I spent at least three hours aboard and shot several rolls of film. I bought a huge blueprint poster of Olympic which hangs proudly in my living room today. I never dreamed I would have had the chance to tour a Great White Fleet ship. I thought them all long gone. What luck that I found her!

Hi Kevin. I am so glad that I came across this series of videos. I have visited the seaport museum a few times and walked the deck of Olympia, but it is so much more interesting to have someone like yourself explaining just what went on aboard the ship. I live in Maine now, so It may be a while before a visit to Philadelphia is in store, but when we do make it down that way, we will stop by the museum - in the meantime, particularly during this period of Covid induced hunkering down at home - it is great to be able to visit the museum virtually - nice job! jt

I'm surprised at all the ornate woodwork in what appear to be common areas. I thought that was the officer's quarters, but there was a gun mounted to the floor so maybe it's not. The glass globes don't look too sturdy, but maybe those things were made with a special glass.

A while back I heard that there was a possibility of her going to drydock in the next few years for long needed repairs. What is the word on that?

I envy Olympia. Japan's near-contemporary memorial ship Mikasa was badly destroyed after WW II. Even now, many important parts are still lost.

Never knew a ship like this still existed. Which brings up the question, how did it avoid the scrap yard? Was there a preservation movement at the time?
@independenceseaportmuseum
3 жыл бұрын
OLYMPIA was singled out for preservation very early on because of her historic connection to the Spanish-American War. The earliest mention of her retiring as a museum occurred in 1912. In January 1923, a month after her final decommissioning, plans were announced for her to be preserved in Washington DC. Delays in planning, funding and eventually Depression and War halted plans for refurbishment for exhibition. Congress had considered scrapping OLYMPIA after WWII but the Cruiser OLYMPIA Association had organized and offered to take the ship and refurbish her for the visiting public.

HMS Warrior is older (1840?) and is afloat - is descibed as iron but its arguably steel?

Which, if any, of the ship's systems are still operational? Pumps, DC generators, main engines, etc.
@independenceseaportmuseum

Most of OLYMPIA'S equipment has been deactivated long ago and for safety and preservation concerns, will remain static. However, Cruiser OLYMPIA does have one ash hoist engine that can be demonstrated on compressed air and her machine shop uses a modern electric motor to demonstrate period equipment.

Greetings, What’s the current status of USS Olympia? Last I heard she was in a precarious state, both physically and financially. Let’s be careful out there.

Hello James, Since the mid-1990s, more than $10 million has been invested in preserving and restoring this national icon. As custodian of Olympia, ISM is committed to her restoration following the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for preservation and restoration. Our next big step in restoration will be a multi-million dollar project to remove the multiple layers of built-up decking added over the original wood surface. A new deck and waterproof membrane will be installed as well as repairs to the underlying steel deck supports. This project will be undertaken where the Olympia is currently berthed.

Didn’t the Olympia bring back the body of John Paul Jones as well to Annapolis?
@independenceseaportmuseum
3 жыл бұрын
OLYMPIA did not bring the remains of John Paul Jones back to the United States. In June 1905, USS BROOKLYN was sent to Cherbourg to receive the remains of Jones. Jones was later interred in the crypt at the US Naval Academy Chapel in April 1906. When Jones' remains were brought back, OLYMPIA was in Monte Christi in the Dominican Republic as part of her last cruise prior to her second decommissioning early the following year.
