Thanks for the video. I've just had 4 new DL's installed in my 200 year old house. Despite the ceiling being replastered after the holes were cut ,each hole has so much filler that we can't remove the socket or light without causing damage. How will we replace the sockets/bulbs in the future? The guy who did the job said there is no way of avoiding this. This hasn't met our expectations as were the expecting the spring fitted sockets that easily pop out (like in other rooms in the house). Would appreciate any advice please. Thanks

For a quality ceiling repair, first stabalize the crumbly plaster with 4:1 PVA. Then apply polyfilla and then sand smooth.

Only possible on top floor lath & plaster ceilings in Scotland, i.e. attic level. On intermediate ceilings between floors, the ceiling void is normally filled with ash deafening for sound proofing (basically the ash/rubble left over from the furnaces of local steelworks) sitting on top of boards between the joists leaving only an inch or so space above the lath. You wouldn't want to put downlighters in our ornate victorian/edwardian ceilings anyway!

If you have to make s bigger whole there is an arbor that fits 2 whole saws on, the original whole size and then what ever size u need to go up by. Stops drill bouncing around as u cut. Coulnt see what it was u used to do that? Was it the addition of the D.AD.e that stopped the saw from going all over the place?
@artisanelectrics

That’s a good tool for plasterboard ceilings but in this case the ceilings are too rough, it wouldn’t work, I simply had to hold the hole cutter steady and firm and star at an angle to cut into one side and then push up, it takes some nack.

@@artisanelectrics ok thanks maybe the ceilings being softer using that technique makes it easier then on plasterboard. Had bad luck trying that way on plasterboard hence getting the arbour lol but not had opportunity to try either on lav ceilings. Thanks for reply

I do this a lot also and I tend to use 2 holesaws of the same size one for the plaster then swap the holesaw over to go through laths that way you go through the laths with a nice sharp holesaw. They don’t last long going through the plaster. Started using the carbide starret holesaws but yet to use on anything other than plasterboard yet.

lath and plaster downlight replacement is a nightmare! especially as the 50watt halogens get so hot they dry out and bake the old ceilings making them even weaker....even worse is when the previous sparkey had the problem and filled around them [as you did] to make it look ok....not too bad with filler to cut with a stanley, but if they used a cauking gun, it goes in further, and is impossible to get the old downlight out without damage...i always worn the customer that they may end up getting a plasterer in to sort it....otherwise it could come back on you.

Good stuff...I suppose with the Fire Rated lights and low voltage mains LED lamps the proximity to the combustible ceiling lathes (heat wise) is now not such a concern...however....I wonder if the transformers that may be involved with low voltage lights, run cool...because if they get too hot they are lying atop the wooden lathe....and not the requisite distance from the combutible material....and therefore a fire hazard Wondered where I'd seen the great video intro prior...wallingtonfilming The Candle man ...A painter has used similar for quite a while. ....Still it's agood one...waiting for the Pearl and Dean adverts mid video.

Hmmm, for someone who likes to bang on about making everything very pretty, you're deluding yourself if you think that repair was invisible. IMO d/l's and lath ceilings do not mix. When wiring new (which admittedly you weren't) the only solution is a 500mm hole where ever a dl is going, followed by a retacking of the ceiling with plasterboard. Then you can cut a hole with a pilot, and without damaging the ceiling.

As a comment lathe and plaster ceilings are still be done today especially in listed properties . and it is always worth checking especially on ground floor ceilings that there will be enough room to install a downlighter as there is often mid boarding which holds sand or ash for sound deadening.

Got to love them crumbly ceilings. Same goes for walls, take off a socket and have the surrounding wall fall apart :D Just a heads up on the hole cutting, listening to the drill bearing down under load, you've got it set to speed 2, which is way, way too fast. Drop it down to 1st gear, 400rpm is more than enough. Use a sharp hole saw and the wood won't burn, you'll get a much cleaner cut that way.

You could use the grip it fixings they are pretty strong, or you will probably just have to install a wooden batten behind the plasterboard and then make good afterwards
