Jon! Don't know if you noticed, but as a fellow classicist, I really dig that your character who's going to reform the Roman Empire is the Chancellor and Commander of Duklja! Dukljan is the Slavic evolution of Diocles, the Augustus of the East who cemented the Empire after the Crisis of the 3rd Century, before forming the Tetrarchy. Dukljan also means "the enemy of god" and is mythicized as a traitor against the Orthodox Christian God. Idk if you knew all this and planned out this start, or if it's a bunch of happy coincidences, but it's awesome as hell.

John, the Kid didn't inherit because that title is the Doge of a republic and it is because of the way that Republic's work. In a republic there are 5 Patrician Houses, who each have their own land, trade ports, and mansion. On the death of the Doge, the most respected of the 5 Heads of the Houses is elected as the new Doge, and get the benefits of the state army and bonus income, with them also being able to pay in gold to their election campaign to gain bonuses towards their chances of becoming elected next time the Doge dies. Republics are actually an interesting different way to play, even if you'll probably end up sticking to the Feudal characters for the most part. An old strategy in the game was to start as the Tribal Vikings in Scandinavia in the earliest start, then reform into a Merchant Republic and abuse the bonuses from being Norse combined with the Republic mechanics.

As a hint for anybody interested. If you have your army in your home territory, you can repentish them way faster by breaking them apart and than recruting them again. If you let them just replentish by letting them stand around, only a fraction of your totally available army will be added, if you raise them again, all what is available will come at once. That said, it only works if it is easy for you to get them come together fast. If your territories are spread out thinly, it will be difficult to gather them again in time.

One way you can pick up more troops mid war is to bring your army home and stand the men down and then call them back up. As long as your territories aren't under siege or occupied the troops replenish any casualties you have sustained but they don't get sent to the front automatically. When you were in a panic trying to find more troops about an hour in you could have picked up about 500 more troops off your own lands. You can check this in the levies tab, the first number is how many men you have raised, the second is how many you have yet to raise and the last is the total number of troops you can have raised up.

Jon, there are few suggestions for choosing a focus and about inheritance in general. Focus often gives you attribute points modifier or events that improve your character. Just like Theology gives you a permanent learning modifier, other focus can also give you modifier according to their attribute modifier (e.g. Carousing giving diplomacy permanent modifier if you actively carouse; Business gives stewardship, etc.). I think there are some modifier gives you health, not just hunting dog, usually pet cat or owl. Theology has events that get rid vices(red round trait) or give virtues(green round trait)through seclusion events, which could be useful for certain characters(also lustful and chaste are reverse for pagans, lustful was seen as a virtue, not vice) . (side note: attributes affect the character in a different way. It is weird that Jon looks Martial stat so highly, since Martial impacts most on commanding troops and the number of troops that get out of personal demesne(directly owned land not vassal). It might be the Cornwall run is a tall playthrough so Jon is thinking that way. Diplomacy is more important if the ruler has a lot of vassals (large empires), since Diplomacy directly impacts opinion, and opinion directly impacts the number of troops provided by vassals. IN SHORT, a zero Diplomacy 20 Martial ruler is scary if the ruler holds more than 5 lands directly even it is a small realm, but if he only holds 1 land, it is much less of a threat. A zero Martial ruler could be a formidable enemy if he has a high 20 Diplomacy with tones of vassals, that his vassals provide all the troops in the world while his personal levy only consists of 1000 men.) Focus also gives something called lifestyle trait that in a shield shape(just like the Strategist commander, Strategist is a lifestyle trait). Basically, they are given after the focus is triggering a certain amount of events that give you a permanent modifier, the trait is given in exchange for the relevant permanent modifier. In your previous playthrough, some characters obtained Gardener through enough gardening or Hunter through enough hunting. I know Jon likes Hunting focus, but I think you should explore more other focus than just Hunting, since different focus gives you lots of fun events and modifiers that can aid your character and your goal to become the emperor of Byzantine. I recommend Business focus since it gives you lots of money through events and modifiers even if you have a small realm, so you don't need to just wait for monthly income or your steward to collect taxes(and your steward can give more special taxes in the event since your annual income is also increased). Inheritance in this episode is mainly about republic(aka elective) and no valid heir. Since many people in the comment already mentioned succession in Merchant republic, I would like to express about Elective monarchy. Elective should be available for Reformed religion, in your case, Christian orthodoxy. Slavic only feature gavelkind and elective gavelkind before reform(unless Council law is set to Full Council Authority, which completely opposite to Jon's current council law). Since this is a roman playthrough, reforming Slavic seems kind of out of the way. If you want something romanish pagany stuff, there is Hellenic. I won't spoil it completely, but you can convert into Hellenic when you control land that is important to Hellenic and actively studying it. Elective monarchy is basically tanistry but for every landed ruler, electors are the titleholder and every de jure landed ruler one tier below that title, not two, and can be voted out of the dynasty. Heir of a person may not be inheriting all the titles since the primary title may be succeeded by someone who wins the election. You can hover to each title to look at its succession law and who is going to succeed it(no need to click on it, but more detailed when you click it). You can always check the history of each title by looking at the history tab of each title(not only the primary title). Just like when the duke of Bosnia died, he does not have eligible heir, his title is succeeded by his liege(not the top liege). For example, if your direct baron vassal died without an heir, the barony will be succeeded by you. Direct vassal can be seen in the character interface in the vassal tab. I hope this helps. You do not need to follow every advice I was given, this is your playthrough and you should play in your style, that's why I subscribed to you in the first place. Wish you enjoy your game 😁

Ok, this game actually impressed me the most when it properly tracked the hunting dog from being gifted as a puppy to notification of its death. Lots of story games like this would have "get a puppy" or "your hunting dog you presumably had offscreen died" as random flavor events unrelated to anything. But no, *every* character introduced is properly tracked dammit! I wouldn't be surprised if there's a chance for your dog to save you from assassins or similar included. I was thinking of giving the temple to one of your sons. That way as I recall that would help disinherit them from gaining any further titles. That's why its common back in those days to apply the youngest sons of the Nobility to priesthood. Dont know if it works for Pagand though haha

So succession within Merchant Republics is a strange beast: Inside of each there are 5 great houses that dominate the politics of the republic. Upon the death of a doge/mayor an election is held, preferring older candidates but you can essentially buy the election if you wanted. Internally however, each House has its own succession, separate from the Republic. This is why MRs will flip and change dynasty at the drop of a hat.

I learned it by playing it and achieving nothing for the first few hours. Just pay attention to the bubbles at the top, they point out things that need your attention. You can learn by watching others play it, but I never found watching CK 2 fun until I learned to play it myself.

It's based on real history, even though in this play-through it occurred a couple of decades too early. The Magyar (I believe it's pronounced something roughly akin to "Mod-yar") invasion of the Carpathian Basin in 895 CE.

In this game, does taking concubines count as being unfaithful? I remember playing as the king of Jorvik and had like 5 concubines and I think his wife was fine... I mean I never checked or asked her so...

@@iniudan ah well with my Jorvik game I just sieged parts of england and scotland kept, executed or ransomed the men and elderly and kept the women for... reasons. Then when they'd start getting pissy I would just well imprison, ransom or execute then I would go to the next territory and get some more... willing women? Jesus christ this game made me feel more like an arsehole then any other game I've played. And I've played ALOT of games where you can be a massive prick
@Flairway00

No, it doesn't. All children, while get a -1 diplomacy penalty for being the child of a concubine, are still considered your children upon birth without having to go through the trouble of determining whether to legitimatize them or not like you would if you had a child out of wedlock.
@thehulkster9434

No, taking concubines does not bring any penalty to your wife's approval rating. I've had rulers cycle through dozens of concubines with no real issue other than an extremely crowded list of children and occasional infighting with half-siblings.

As a Slavic person, hearing Jon pronounce just about every name of everything in the English pronunciation is both cringe and funny. Crunny? Funge? In any case, Jon, please. It's Perun(Perún where I'm from) not Pejran. The "r" is pronounced as in ruthless. Also, the acute accent written over some of the letters (é,í,á,ý,ú etc) makes the pronunciation "long". é=ee, á=aa etc (for example, English "Aaron" would be "Áron")
@erik260196
4 жыл бұрын
Close, I'd say something like this: "Pe" the same way as in pestilence, "ru" as in ruthless (the u is a long ú where I'm from so make it sound like in the o's in "oof") , clear "n" (not "en" just "n") like in now.

The reason your plot to put a three-year old in charge of Ragusa failed was because Ragusa's a merchant republic and thus plays by merchant republic rules. Every time their ruler dies, they get to vote in a new ruler from their five powerful families. The male leaders of these families decide who gets to rule based on a few factors. For example, their prestige, their age, and how much they're bribing the electorate play into who gets elected. Women can't be rulers at all in a merchant republic. It's also possible children can't be voted in at all, even if they happen to be the head of the house, can't remember if that's the case. Anyways, that's why they got a completely different ruler than who you expected. It's also the reason why there's always an old man ruling Ragusan & Venetian republics.
