This video series follows mining for rare water clear barite crystals in the Book Cliffs near Grand Junction Colorado. The Sirius mine produces ethically mined barite and calcite crystals that can be seen at www.bookcliffgems.com. The rare water clear barite crystals are only found in the Book Cliff formation of Eastern Utah and Western Colorado. Barite is heavy, with a specific gravity of 4.0 to 4.5 but is also a relatively soft crystal, with a hardness of 3.0 to 3.5, similar to copper.
Water clear calcite crystals are also found and can be polished to a gem quality stone. The calcite is characterized by the rhombic crystal shape with angles typically at 73 and 107 degrees.
Much of the area was heavily mined in the eighties but most of those crystals are no longer on the market.
