Since starting the Preacher Boys Podcast in 2020, I've had the privilege of speaking with hundreds of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. Through these conversations, a common thread emerged: many survivors did not disclose their abuse until they were adults. It took years of trust-building with friends, family, and therapists for them to feel comfortable discussing their experiences openly.
These stories are not isolated incidents.
Statistics indicate that 55 to 69% of adults who experienced childhood sexual abuse never disclosed it as children.
Furthermore, research suggests that it takes between 17.2 years and 21.4 years for survivors to disclose their abuse publicly. (Steine et al., 2016, Easton, 2013)
Frustratingly, many survivors face roadblocks when seeking justice due to the Statute of Limitations in their respective states.
That's why I'm asking for your support of a petition to introduce the Child Survivors Act in Indiana. This act aims to extend the time limit for pursuing criminal justice and damages for survivors of childhood sexual assault.
By eliminating statutes of limitations for sexual abuse of minors, the Child Survivors Act seeks to empower survivors to pursue justice. While the focus is currently on the state of Indiana, our goal is for this legislation to expand nationwide, providing more survivors with the opportunity for justice.
I urge you to join me in supporting this important cause by signing the petition at Change.org/IndianaCSA.Together, we can make a difference in the lives of survivors and work towards a future where justice is accessible to all.
