The ESV thinline was the first Bible I ever picked out and purchased for myself. I've been looking into CSB lately, so I really appreciate this video! The ultrathin reference Bible has to be my preference, the only hardcore reference Bible I have is the NASB MacArthur Study Bible.

I'd choose the thinline reference, not particularly for the center column references but for the concordance. The reason why I like the ESV thinline so much because it comes with a concordance. Standard thinlines usually dont come with one. Thanks Tim, great video!

Hi Tim: Thanks for this great video. At 0:05 you mention that these are "a couple of new thinline editions" of the CSB. I believe only the Thinline Bible is new though, while the Ultrathin Reference Bible is not. The latter is only available in the older 2017 CSB Text Edition. Since Holman published the 2020 Text Edition, they haven't released another ultrathin Bible - which is a pity. I hope they'd release a black letter Ultrathin Reference Bible as part of their Holman Handcrafted Bible Collection. As regards the comparison of both, if people don't mind the older 2017 Text Edition, the Ultrathin is great to carry to Bible Studies. It's actually smaller than the Thinline, the cross-reference is a great feature to use in Bible Studies without having to switch to your gadgets or carrying a much larger Study Bible, and ... the Bible Serif font - that is just such a beauty to behold! The CSB Ultrathin Refence Bible is just the perfect showcase of what a 2K/Denmark typeface can achieve: a remarkably thin and light Bible that with the visual readibility of a much larger Bible. Blessings, man.

If I could buy only one, I would get the Ultrathin Reference Bible (because of the references and the concordance); I actually bought one (and I got it in black genuine leather on sale for about $28.00). However, for just reading, I would prefer the black and brown Thin version due to the larger font size and the clean reading layout.

Great review! I have the HCSB ultra thin version of the leather-touch reference bible and I loved it! The leather-touch is pretty flexible, I wasn’t delicate with it and more rough than I normally would have been but it was my everyday reader all year and it held up great! Paper liner can wear if one’s abusive with it but it still holds up great! I’m reading the CSB this year might have to get one in a thinline. Perfect size bible for everyday and travel.

idk for sure about sewing leather, but with sewing machines that I use for fabric you can run two colors of thread, one for the top of the stitch and one for the bottom, I assume that's what they did here. with the tension set properly the two threads come together in the center of the stitch and you can't see the thread from the opposite side.

Hey Tim, as always I appreciate your videos and the care with which you analyze all the different details. Interestingly, I've been going back and forth these past few weeks on which of these CSB Bibles I want to use for my carry-around/outreach Bible, so I've spent quite a bit of time analyzing both in depth. I should point out, first of all, that in this video you're actually not comparing the same generation of Bibles. This year CSB released a "thinline" version, which boasts a slightly different format and the newly updated 2020 text revision, as compared to the previous "ultrathin" version with the 2017 text. So in this video you're actually not comparing the same generation, as the reference Bible you have here is the older ultrathin and not the newer thinline reference that was released this year. That being said, as I've spent a couple weeks pouring over both newer versions (the thinline and the thinline reference), here are some of my thoughts: 1. The thinline has a cleaner look, which is easier for using on the go and for sharing verses with people since it doesn't have all the extra references that the thinline reference has. 2. Furthermore, the small letters in the text of the reference edition indicating references are sometimes too distracting as I am reading, but even more so because they are placed following the words, as are the footnote letters -- so many times there is a trail of letters (including both reference letters and footnote letters) after words, and it's simply too much. The ESV reference Bible simplifies this by putting the reference letters prior to the words as opposed to following them, and then indicating the footnotes by using numbers following the words, making for a less busy and easier to read look. 3. I like that the thinline reference has the concordance in the back, in part because it gives some more space between the last pages of Revelation and the back cover; I don't know why the regular thinline eliminates this extra resource (for example, the ESV thinline has a concordance in the back despite not being a reference edition). 4. I don't like the updated map style of the 2020 thinline versions. I think all the blue and pink and purple looks less dignified and harder to read than the classier looking maps in the back of the previous ultrathin versions (as you can observe in the back of your black ultrathin reference Bible in this video). 5. In conclusion, I don't love either, to be honest. I am hoping Holman will come out with a large print compact double-column version, or else for them to make a thinline version with a concordance and better maps in the back. :)

Sometimes you hold the Bible up to let people see the type face but then dont wait long enough for the camera to focus and so we don’t get to see it. I know I’ve commented before about these issues, but some people care more about the text block, type face and paper than they do leather and all that stuff. (apparently not that many people care more about paper quality, type face and text lay out but there are some.)

I like the larger font, margins, line spacing and clean interface of the thinline bible. Like the two-tone cover too :) Perfect take-anywhere reading bible! I would prefer two ribbons (one in brown). If I wanted references, I'd go for a bible with a similar font size and layout to the Allan bible.

In the late 80's I bought an NIV "Deluxe Ultrathin" reference Bible. It had many things going for it and received a lot of miles before its "retirement." The one thing I hated was that the paper stock was SOOO thin that it was frustratingly difficult to turn the pages without grabbing extra pages just to get to the next page. I wonder if the paper stock between these two that you're comparing uses the same thickness of paper stock, or if the ultrathin version uses thinner stock. I'm about to pull the trigger on a CSB (either thinline or the single column personal size) but wonder if the paper stock on the thinline will frustrate me.

Have you ever tried using a bible app as your on-the-go bible? I have a heavy study bible I use to read at home and use a bible app when I'm out and about for convenience, but I don't really like reading the bible from my phone because it has little "breathing room." A physical thinline bible is appealing to me because it's more portable, but I worry that I won't use it because it seems like nothing will beat the convenience of reading on your phone

I have both of these but neither of them worked out. I think it's the font style....hard to read. And the paper gets wavy from being touched. Then I found a 2004 HCSB ultrathin reference. The font style is much better and the type size is slightly larger. It looks like a 9 pt type with center column references. Paper doesn't get wavy. For a portable CSB, I like the large print compact. For me the type is easier to read than the Thinline or Ultrathin.

Just wondering if you’ve ever done reviews of women’s bibles or designed for women? Most of the Bible’s you’ve reviewed so far are ver manly from a design standpoint. I’ve looked on Christian Book and seen the ‘female’ versions of most of these and those are just not my cup of tea. 😏 I think the best not so ugly Bible designs have some kind of color combo like the yellow with blue or petrol etc etc. I think if the major bible producers would consider the leather touch in colors like that, that would be so great. I bought an NIV Grace and Truth study Bible mostly because of the blue leather with red liner, etc. 😮
