CSX Hudson Line Freight in New York City Third Rail Territory. There is one area on CSX’s operating territory that requires its engines to have a specific clearance and that is MTA Metro-North Railroad territory. Locomotives operating here require not only ACSES but also a “cut plow” that has notches on the side so that it will clear third rail as well as being listed in the MTA Metro-North Railroad timetable. The plow is denoted by a yellow painted edge. The plurality commodity that is moved on these rails is garbage from Waste Management in green containers on spine cars. In addition, there are refrigerated food cars, C&D (construction and demolition debris), lumber, chemicals, plastic pellets, and of course the famous “beer and pizza” (cars separately with beer and flour) cars. Some of the cars are moved to the last mile by CSX and some are moved by the New York and Atlantic Railway, a subsidiary of Anacostia Rail that operates on the MTA Long Island Rail Road. This video includes one each of what Conrail called OPSE and SEOP (OP = Oak Point, Bronx, New York; SE = Selkirk, New York). On these days, both trains had YN2 GE AC44CWs for power, but the EMD SD40-2 fleet still makes intermittent appearances. Both train normally run at night in order to avoid interfering with the passenger trains that run during the day.
