september 16, 2023. What was once the Alabama Midland RR makes up the western portion of today's bowline route on the CSX in south Georgia and Alabama. After entering the railroad business with the reorganized Savannah Florida and Western Railroad in the 1870's, Henry Plant sought to extend his railroad operations into Alabama and found a charter for the then unbuilt Alabama Midland. Buying the charter, he built the line from the SF&W terminus at Bainbridge Georgia all the way to Montgomery Alabama via the areas known today as Donaldsonville Georgia and Dothan Alabama. He ran the two lines as separate railroads and they were the start of his railroad empire as he built and created other railroads in Florida; all of which, including the afore mentioned lines, became collectively known as the Plant System. Two years after his passing, his family sold all the lines to the Atlantic Coast Line, which formally merged them into itself. The line was then the furthest west the ACL ran until the late 1940's when it acquired the Atlanta Birmingham and Atlantic RR Co. This section of the line is part of CSX's Dothan Subdivision that runs between Dothan Alabama and Thomasville Georgia. I caught this train while checking out Donaldsonville to see what the downtown area was like and I was nearly caught off guard by it's passing through towards Dothan. I overtook it in Jakin, which isn't far from the state line, and got this video of it. Enjoy. (the turning the camera away from the train was on purpose so as to not record inappropriate graffiti pictures on one of the freight cars.)
