Presenting the beauty of Cuan. Andrew Scott notes in his book "The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names" that the Saanich First Nations called Salt Spring Island “Cuan”, which means each end, and the Quw' utsun' called the island “Klaathem”, which means salt. The Quw' utsun' also named a mountain on the south of the island “Chuan”, or facing the sea, which is the name Douglas applied to the entire island on a map from 1854. Just to be clear. And that I like stirring up debates!
This film started as a little family film - but then it morphed into a nature film using epic timelapses I shot around the island. I also just happened to be reading "Braiding Sweetgrass" by Robin Wall Kimmerer. And within the book - a phrase had me thinking, "If you love the land, it will love you back." I love this island. I love the Gulf Islands. I think this film shows how an island can love you back. Hopefully you can see it's not really the beauty of my filmmaking skills, rather it's the combined eternal beauty of the language and scenery that moves you...
