Good review! The AI is really the biggest downside for learning up front, if that does not scare someone away then I recommend it! In some COIN games, it is possible to play 2 v 2 in solo (or co-op) mode. I have not played this one, but A Distant Plain (Afghanistan) lets you take on Govt + Coalition v Taliban + Warlords, and Liberty or Death lets you team up Patriots + French v British + Natives similarly. That way you take 2x as many actions, and one fewer AI to run...I tend to go that way when learning a new COIN series game. That said, running the AI is probably the biggest hurdle for this game in solo/co-op mode!

They mention the possibility of playing two sides in the rules, and they are pretty clearly delineated (26+directorio vs gov+sydnicate). I didn't see any official rule on how to score/win such play, but I assume it'd be easy enough to say you either average each side's results, or compare your worst side to their best side if you want to really be challenging. That would also allow coop if it worked.

One Stop Co-op Shop For the COIN games I own, you have to meet all conditions for both factions that are on the same team, and take the lower of the 2 scores. Not sure if it is the same for CL though. I do recommend that for first time solo though, to keep pace up sand flowchart paralysis down while learning the ropes. I believe the AIs are still considered independent, so they only need to meet individual win conditions.

@@mrsamtheman80 I probably just missed that in the rules. Sounds really good! I'll play with that next time.

I bought Fire in the Lake based off your review. Still studying it. (Part of my learning process) Just ordered Cuba Libre so I can practice the system on a smaller board. 🤣 FWIW, I was floored by the level of detail and organization of the FITL rules and playbook. After solo gaming roughly 60 games in a year and a half, it was the first time I’ve found a game where the rules were written in a way that my brain actually understands. (Maybe because I used to write training manuals?) Pax Pamir 2e, another game purchase you inspired, took me watching probably 20 hours of playthroughs, 24 plays, and writing my own player aid so I could “see” the actions how the player takes them vs how the Wakhan takes them. (I should have just learned multiplayer first- would have made things a lot easier.) I’ve tried *repeatedly* to understand Root and Spirit Island. My brain just doesn’t get it/doesn’t like it. I feel like COIN was probably the best place for me to go post PP. (Which is my absolute favorite game so far) Thanks for all the work you put into these vids.

Glad to be helpful! And yeah, Root and PP2nd solo rules are both hard for me to grok and remember sometimes. Just finished recording the recently delivered John Company and those rules are a beast too. But Spirit Island? That one surprises me. Never that one too much of a challenge personally compared to the others we named :)

@@OneStopCoopShop Spirit Island might be because of the theme - which I actually like overall, (elements vs invaders) but as fantasy themes aren’t really my thing, that might get in the way of understanding the actions. I’ve almost bought it half a dozen times. People also seem to say it’s more chess like in how far you have to be planning ahead. That’s not my thing either. I enjoy being more immediately reactive to the game state and not having to hold a ton of things in my head.

You should check out Gandhi, the newest COIN. It has a deck of AI cards instead of flowcharts. The designers of the solo system intend to retrofit it to older COIN games (not sure which ones though).

Hi Mike You mention Labyrinth The War On Terror. How difficult is that to learn and play as a solo gamer compared to the coin series of games like Fire In The Lake and Cuba Libre etc. I’m currently trying to get my head around Pendragon.

Oh, it's way easier. The biggest difference is that there are only 2 sides, analogous to the government and 26 July here. So if you can figure out how to run 1 AI, you are good to go :)

The AI flowchart stuff looks like something that should be implemented in a video game and not boardgame.

I think that it would be much better to play all factions by yourself in a solo game - there's no hidden information here so it would be possible ;).

Absolutely. I used to do that kind of thing all the time back when I was playing more war games. That being said, a lot of gamers don't consider that "solo" officially, so i didn't want to base my review on that type of play.
