@thundermuffin66 You must be meaning loyal to Castro. A boxer can fight wherever he wants and that should not mean any disloyalty.
Actually you are wrong. The Cuban government said yes if the fight would be within amateur rules and Ali's promoters said "he had nothing to win and a lot to lose." Ali was amazing, no doubt, but if Stevenson would have trained for a few years to adapt to the professional style, who knows what could had happen. One thing is for sure, he was an unbelievable boxer, tremendous skill and a hammer in his right hand.

There is no doubt that Stevenson was one of the greatest boxers ever. If he had become pro, eventually he would have been one of the best also. It's moronic to say he was just a good amateur. There's a reason why Ali refused to fight him: he knew he could had lost to an amateur. He lost fights, so did Ali, Louis, Tyson and every boxer ever.

Bottom line: you cannot argue the fact that since he never fought the best professional boxers of the day, most people have NO CLUE who he is today. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that Stevenson would've loved to have fought the best, and not just stayed on his farm, raising goats, and being broke and forgotten. Just a hunch. His failed government screwed him. So stop whining about your hatred for a free society; Stevenson never got a chance to do what he wanted to.

Yeah its pretty hard to think that he would like to prosper at something he's good at. It isn't about money, its about the freedom to do what you want. He never got that chance because he was a puppet of Castro. And that is disgusting. Having the freedom to do and say what you want beats free health care ANYDAY. Plus in Cuba and Canada free health care takes months to happen (ask a Canadian). I'd rather get an appointment to see a doctor in the same week, and not wait for weeks in pain for free.

Stevenson was certainly great, but its a little ironic that a guy called Petr Sommer from Czech(oslovakia) beat him twice and absolutely nobody cares, hes a poor pensioner living in total obscurity who never gave any international interview. Besides none of those amatuers could've lasted 5 rounds with GEORGE FOREMAN (let alone any of the other pros I mentioned). Stevenson never turned pro because of the political stupidity that is enforced in CUBA. Any government that would keep a man from reaching his full potential is bullshit, and that's what CUBA did to Stevenson.

If Castro would've truly let Stevenson do what he wanted---WHAT HE WAS GREAT AT--- he would've been able to fulfill his potential. But of course that ISN'T what happened. Stevenson is wasting away on some farm thinking of what could've been, while millions of people have no clue he even existed.
