Havana, Cuba - historic Morro Castle (Castillo del Morro) in Havana, Cuba. Let's travel to Cuba and let's visit the city of Havana and Old Havana (Habana Vieja) and we will visit Morro Castle. Let's go visit Morro Castle, a wave-lashed fort (Morro Castle) with its emblematic lighthouse which was erected between 1589 and 1630 to protect the entrance to Havana harbor from pirates and foreign invaders (French corsair Jacques de Sores had sacked the city in 1555). Morro Castle is perched high on a rocky bluff above the Atlantic, Morro Castle has an irregular polygonal shape, 3m-thick walls and a deep protective moat, and is a classic example of Renaissance military architecture.
For more than a century Morro Castle withstood numerous attacks by French, Dutch and English privateers, but in 1762 after a 44-day siege a 14,000-strong British force captured El Morro by attacking from the landward side. The Castillo's famous lighthouse was added in 1844.
Havana is Cuba’s capital city. Spanish colonial architecture in its 16th-century Old Havana core includes the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, a fort and maritime museum. The National Capitol Building is an iconic 1920s landmark. Also in Old Havana is the baroque Catedral de San Cristóbal and Plaza Vieja, whose buildings reflect the city’s vibrant architectural mix.
