Hi Czech_n_Effect, I am Cuban and I have watched your video carefully. I have no interest in creating discussions between Dominicans and Cubans. We are two sister countries and that is what counts. You have seen the Cuban and Dominican phenomena and from there you have launched your comparison, but there is something very important that you have not taken into account, and that is that Cuba, unlike the Dominican Republic, has suffered for 60 years, a cruel, unfair and illegal blockade of its economy by the United States. Have you ever heard of this? Do you understand how, in what way and to what extent the US measures affect the entire political, economic and social life of Cuba? Well, if you don't know, I'll tell you the fundamental points so you can understand. The Dominican Republic and Cuba are Caribbean countries and live on Tourism, BUT there are American laws that prevent their citizens from traveling to Cuba as tourists. This results in the Dominican Republic receiving 3 million American tourists every year and Cuba barely receiving 400,000. This implies annual losses for the Cuban economy of about 3 billion dollars, and in 60 years, we are already talking about 180 billion of dollars. Dominican Republic has no problem receiving American cruises. Cuba is prohibited. A Dominican citizen who resists in the USA, can send to his country all the money he wants, a Cuban can only send 300 dollars a month. Dominican and North American companies can trade freely. North American companies cannot trade freely with the Cuban government. Dominican products are sold freely in the United States, Cuban products are banned there. If a ship from any country touches the Dominican port, then you can go to the United States without problems. If that same ship touches the Cuban port, you must wait 6 months to enter the United States. Any American can go on his yacht and enter the Dominican Republic. To Cuba, however, can no longer go. The United States does not fine banks anywhere in the world for moving Dominican money, however, it does fine those same banks for moving Cuban money. Dominican athletes who play in the North American leagues can reside in their country and invest their money in their country. Cuban athletes cannot reside in Cuba and cannot invest their money in their country. Cuba, unlike the United States, which has an external debt of 23 million million or Mexico, which has an external debt of 420 billion, or Argentina, which has an external debt of 370 billion or Puerto Rico, which has an external debt of 167 billion, has a tiny debt of 11 billion dollars. The Dominican Republic has 3 times more debt, since its external debt is 36.5 billion dollars. The United States has forcibly taken a piece of Cuban territory, the Guantanamo Naval Base. There is the best Cuban port, and it is, because it is the closest Cuban port to the Panama Canal. If Cuba could exploit that port, it would earn 1,000 million dollars annually, therefore, we could say that 60 billion dollars have been lost for that concept. Finally, when comparing Cuba with the Dominican Republic, it should not be forgotten that Cuba has suffered losses of 900 billion dollars caused by the unjust, cruel and illegal policies of the United States. Dominican Republic is a normal country. Cuba is an abnormal country that has been living in economic warfare for 60 years.

I have to say, I've been to Cuba 3 times and I LOVE Cuba. I love Cuba for the fact that its NOT Americanized. I love the culture in Cuba most definitely the music and salsa. I also love the DR for different reasons. I did disagree with some of the opinions stated in the video, especially about the women not dressing appealing. I think Cuba actually does a better job. I think Colombia is top overall. Cuban women will make you feel like a king tho, they will pamper you and are the most affectionate. Anyway, as you mentioned, there's alot of similar history to the DR, Cuba and Cartagena. Everything else is relative. Each of those countries are great.

One thing about health insurance in the DR; Yes, you don't need it but if you get sick or need medical attention in any way please make sure to go to a public hospital where you'll be treated for free (unless you're wealthy and can pay for a private clinic out of pocket). If you end up in a private clinic they will take care of you, but they will want to get paid and they won't leave you go until you come up with the money. Are Dominicans public hospitals good? Well, they'll take care of you but don't expect the same level of cleanliness you'll find in the USA. If you're pregnant and deliver your child over there you may have to share a bed with another woman...it all depends on the area and to be fair public hospitals in the touristy areas are better. But why not just buy travel health insurance (which is not very expensive)? Also, if God forbid you die in the D.R. without insurance your family will either have to pay out of pocket to repatriate your body....or you will be buried as a "John Doe" in the D.R....or cremated. So don't be a cheap *sshole...buy health insurance.

Ulises Jorge Bidó how to buy health insurance in D.R as a traveling visitor ?
@ulisesjorge
4 жыл бұрын
@@Czechineffect You don't buy that in the D.R., but in your home country. If you live in the USA and have health insurance I would contact your provider and see what they offer in term of coverage when traveling overseas. Otherwise you'll have to buy a travel policy and the coverage varies depending on your particular situation. You might want something different than a guy who's travelling with the wife and kids; someone with a special condition might want insurance that cover medical transport back to his/her home country. My comment was mostly motivated by one of those cases that were on the news early this year when the media couldn't stop talking about American tourists dying in the D.R.; there was this woman who died of a heart attack and her son was talking to the media about how Dominican authorities wanted to bury her in the country because he somehow expected the D.R. to send her body back to the USA. This unfortunate woman obviously didn't have travel insurance, so that's basically what happens when you die overseas. I also remember the case of a British couple that went to Punta Cana and she was eight months pregnant; well, she went into labor and she was taken to a private clinic (I don't know why and the press of course didn't focus in that part of the story). Her kid was premature and took a lot of care and they were handled a bill for about $30,000 and told that they wouldn't leave the clinic until they pay. They had to raise money online to pay it, but all that could have been avoided it have they purchase travel insurance or request to be taken to a public hospital when she went into labor.

Your comments are spot on. Also Santeria, which is a religion brought by slaves from Africa is a very predominant aspect of Cuban culture, and it has been embraced by both black and white Cubans. This has contributed to the embrace of the African/black culture in Cuba. You did not mention the cleanliness in Cuba though. The average barrio in Cuba is much cleaner than in the DR. Also because of the economic problems, most Cubans prefer to dress very simple.

@@Czechineffect I have to say that I have a lot of respect for what you’re doing and by that I mean going to the D.R. and showing the world what you see and not what the local tourism authorities want you to see. I get what they’re doing as their business is to make money but I always tell people that if they go to the D.R. and spend all their time in a resort they haven’t seen the D.R. So thanks you for that. I also appreciate you taking the time to respond to our comments; that shows a lot of respect for your audience and I’ve become a subscriber just because of that. Now, regarding my comment and your response you did not mention Villa Mella as one of the places you have visited. The Congo music from Villa Mella is world famous and they’ve even been recognized by UNESCO for their contribution to preserve the country African cultural roots. If you’re in the country all I can request is that you ask around about Congo, Salve and Palo music with are authentic Dominican music that show our African roots. The fact is that Dominican culture is by definition African culture and there is always a breakdown in communication when someone from outside come and ask a Dominican about their African culture or influences. When it comes to music the biggest Dominican contribution to Latin America are Bachata and Megengue; Bachata is huge now but it’s basically African elements added to the traditional Latin American Bolero. I know that if you’ve been in the D.R. a lot you really can’t miss Bachata and what it means to the country. It is a long and complex topic and all I can do is request that if you have it in you to ask around and speak with others in the D.R. that are better prepare to discuss this than me. But I didn’t want your anecdote of running into a Dominican that’s darker than you but claims to be “from Spain” to be all that your subscribers learn about this topic. I believe you because it’s something that I’ve heard as well and it’s rooted simply in poor education; the Dominican Republic education system is the worst in Latin America and a huge percentage of our population are easily manipulated by propaganda and the narrative that certain people with too much influence want to create. Finally, I don’t want to end this long comment without addressing what you saw in Cuba; this is not an attack on the communist ideology of the Cuban government as that it’s a political issue for the Cuban people to address. But the undeniable fact is that in a communist country the government controls everything. Those clubs you saw that were playing “African Spanish music” are government properties and are set up to show you the image that the Cuban government wants to show the world. So is not really and apples to apples comparison; who knows, if Cubans have the freedom and resources to set up their own clubs they might do the same style of club that you saw but there’s no way to know that and I don’t think it’s a fair comparison. I don’t have the last word on this, but it would help a lot and answer a lot of questions if you were to look into this aspect of Dominican reality and present what you find to your subscribers. There are others more qualified than me to speak about this complex issue in the D.R. and I would search them over and speak to them.

Cuba is my favorite place on the planet. The music is not "african-Spanish" music. It is music deeply rooted in Rumba and the Yoruba religion(Santeria in many Caribbean countries). Cuba has retained many original afro traditions that our Democratic American government forbid slaves from practicing(or learning how to read about it). For those that don't know please research cuban "Guanguanco" or Rumba without an "h". Ase.

If you go to Etecsa in Cuba, the internet card is $1 for one hour and $5 for 5 hours, in the parks fellas sell the 1 hour internet card for $2. In regards to the currency, you have to watch how you buy too much of that cuc because Cuba is not accepting that inside the airport after you pass security to purchase things. You have to change your CUC at airport before you go through security, or you need Usd, eur, cad to spend and you basically losing plus they charge 10 percent on the usd additional when purchasing things inside the airport after passing security. It seems like they are preparing to get rid of the CUC, so if you holding on too much of that and they say tomorrow they are not using anymore, then now you stuck with money you cannot use no more or get anything for it.

The afro-cuban music you heard in the club is actually Santeria music. That's Cuba's main religion and is similar to the Haitian voodoo. DR has something similar (Palo music) but is not played in the night clubs (Dominicans are mostly Christians). The Afro pride was something implemented by Castro’s communism. It was something very promoted to instile a national pride. Now even with all the afro inclusion and what not cuba to this day is super super racist. DR had a different history to make it the way it is. Cuban had a more usa type slavery and they layer way into the 1900s as a colony which adds to this very Afro division or recognition. So black Cubans or Cubans in general recognize their Afro component but still there is a stronger racial division or underlying racism which comes out a lot. In dr race is really not a conversational topic unless you forcefully bring it up.

There are plenty restaurants you can get cheap food, but the food taste bad for the most part unless you go to the good restaurants and spend say $7 which include a beer or rum drink or soda or juice. There is a sandwich place in miramar on the street in a little park where you can get two ham and cheese sandwich grill for a $1 and taste good. My assessment of the food is mostly in Havana where the food taste bad, in other provinces the food is good like around those country sides. I been to Dominican republic before it is easier to change your money and less stress. Cuba is much safer than Dominican republic whereas you can walk the streets late at night basically all over the place. Then fellas trying to sell you cocaine, all kind of nonsense in Dominican republic. People still go Dominican I guess because it is less stress when changing your money because in Havana you have to watch who you change your money with and it seem they keep changing up their rules in regards to currency. It is not so smart to buy euros because you probably pay usd 1.15 for euro 1 and when you go Cuba their rate is like $1.06 or less sometimes so you basically losing. The usd can be worse though.

I think that one week is really not enough even to discover la habana... life is very very complicated in cuba and as you know the country is under US BLACKOUT SINCE YEARS so you cannot compare those two places. I've been to Cuba🇨🇺 (Havana) and D.R.🇩🇴 (Santo Domingo). I liked the fact that Cuban people accept their African heritage and celebrate it with pride, in D.R.🇩🇴 like you said they don't even want to associate themselves to anything about African heritage. Cuba🇨🇺 people do suffer from US sanctions and embargoes which make their lifestyle very difficult compared to the D.R.🇩🇴 When I said they suffer, it's real suffering even with basic things like food, clothing, medicines etc.. At the same time, with all the hardship they have, Cubans🇨🇺 are not money thirsty like Dominicans. 🇩🇴 I learned more about life and saw how fortunate I was when I visited in Cuba🇨🇺 than in the D.R.🇩🇴 I started to appreciate more the simplest things in life when I spent 11 days in Cuba.🇨🇺 I think without all the US sanctions against Cuba, Cuba🇨🇺 would be better than the D.R.🇩🇴 Good video content brother and thanks for your advices and tips when I visited the D.R. God bless you. 🙏🏾

@@SDST-p8x What do you call latin country? USA is not an African country but has African descents who don't deny their heritage, that's the same with Cuba and many latin countries. You pointed out D.R. don't want anything about Africa but Spain, that's cool for you maybe because you're not black and you don't relate to that heritage. And I know what happened with Haiti and the world knows. When I said D.R. rejected their African heritage I meant the african descent population of the D.R. Here is the 2019 census of the D.R. 70.4% mixed race (Black🤫 and white🤗) 15.8% black🤫 13.5% white🤗 It's totally right in D.R. for all these 3 categories to identify themselves as Spanish descents.🤗 But it's totally wrong in D.R. for even the 15.8% of black to accept their African roots🤔🤫 I have nothing against D.R. people, I have friends and I am still making friends in D.R. but I just gave my observation based on my living experience. Emms King Congo , I grew up in Harlem, spanish Harlem , and the Bronx and I have never seen Afro-American practicing their African heritage and celebrating it with pride. I don't have an issue with that. People shoulddo what they like.I do agree Cuba practicing their African heritage more than Dominican but you need to understand that 1 million Africans were bought to Cuba and 500K To the Hispaniola. The Dominican Rep being the second largest Island in the Caribbean many other islanders came from Jamaica, Bahamas, Curaçao, St Kitt, And etc to work the sugar sugarcane field. They came through the largest Port San Pedro Macoris DR. That's why you have a lot of famous baseball players From San Pedro that don't have Spanish last names like George Bell, Robbie Cano, Domingo German and many other. Dominicans are a mixed race of everything including Africans, European, Arabs , Korean, Chinese, and other Latin country. Some Dominicans do practices their African heritage I have seen it. Last comment we have many Dominicans that are educated, but they are not going to be in the ghetto. You will be surprised that many students from other countries come to study in DR. Ask our Haitian friends many of them get a few education in DR.

That's American prices for mango in rd. Mangos cost in da street about $6-$10. In da clubs in santo domingo about $20-$25. In Punta cana it's super expensive because of tourist. But in fruisa or Veron punta Cana its about $4-$8 in the street and $15-$20 in casacita. Sasoua about $15-$30 in da street and $40-$100 in casacita. These might just be Dominican prices but if you live there or speak Spanish these prices are about normal. If they know you from the states they will definitely jack up the price. But if you say no they will eventually get to these prices because they dont want to lose money. After it's all over they will try to bribe you for a tip. Just say no.
