Dr. G...you're so smart. Thank you for drawing on a live human foot. Now I can show the physiotherapist with confidence that I have this injury. A bone scanned revealed a stress fracture of the navicular. After 8 weeks I believe its health but, I'm still having pain. I can not stand on the foot nor walk. The pain is located exactly as you drew on your model. You made me very happy👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This is a fantastic video, especially drawing where the cuboid resides and articulates and pain may refer. I figured out I have this, its excrutiating burning stabbing pain at times for only several days even without weight bearing like lying the "wrong way "in bed...position is activating, I can't walk even in my total arch support running shoes. Have no idea what happened but now I can go to chiropractor with info if manual ball manipulation doesnt work. My problem arose from an injured left ankle and knee which has been feeling better with adjustments and yoga, I think it altered my gait enough to cause a right cuboid issue along with wearing some springy darn cute sketchers that don't have arch support

Thank you for this video. I think this might be the answer for me. I have been dealing with lateral foot pain for over a year after suddenly developing extreme pain after running three days in a row. I have been to my PCP, a Sports Medicine Dr. and an Orthopedic surgeon, then referred to PT, which did not help. Xrays were normal and the orthopedic Dr. thought it was my lateral tendons. My pain ranges from dull to aching/throbbing to excruciating and sharp. The pain is nonexistent in the morning, but based on the number of steps or how long I am on my feet, the pain gets worse. By 10,000 steps I am in so much pain. Resting or staying off of my foot is the only pain relief. I was a college athlete, but have not been able to work out properly in so long. Just shooting the basketball with my son is difficult because rebounding or changing directions on my foot is so painful. I do have lax joints throughout my body since having kids, too. I look forward to trying the roller method. If you have any other information or recommendations for a specialist in the Fort Collins, CO area I would appreciate it. Thank you again for your video.

Ran my first marathon last saturday, got a sharp pain on the lateral side of my left foot just about halfway through. I knew it was stupid but I fought through and finished the marathon, my right foot also started to hurt by the end from me limping for a half marathon, but not as badly as my left. The next day the lateral side of my foot was discolored and swelled up, I had to crawl to get to the bathroom that morning. I fear a stress fracture, but suspect cuboid syndrome, so far I have been unable to find someone with competence in the area, the examination by the doctor I went to was just a waste of time and money. Think I might try rolling on it like suggested here, but a little hesitant as I dont have ruled out a stress fracture in there. I've taped a cuboid sling on my feet right now, that seems to help.

Zaafir Ali depending on the extent of the injury(the amount of discoloring due to tissue injury) complete resolution is anywhere from 1-4 weeks. The quicker resolution is when the sprain is very mild vs a more severe sprain you are looking at the latter.

I went to 2 physios who said it was an ankle sprain but now I have had a MRI and have a oedema on the cuboid, I have to wear a boot for 8 weeks. No-one mentioned manipulating the cuboid, I would do anything to help it heal quicker.

Edel Butler if that cuboid is stuck, you definitely need it manipulated. It’s similar to whipping a towel or piece of clothing out of the dryer before you fold it. Pressure needs to be applied directly over the bottom of the foot where the pain is located.

I sprained my ankle February 15th playing basketball. I landed on someones foot and i twisted it. I heard a pop so i rested awhile. I run track and actually returned to running a couple weeks after that. After awhile i started feeling bad at the bottom of my foot so I sat out the rest of the season. The the lateral side of my foot, it looks slightly bigger than my other foot. My doctor said not to worry about it that it is a muscle. I got an xray and everything was normal. I then later got a mri resulting in a suspicious of a stress fracture and a sprain in a ligament. I forgot what the name of it was. After that I got put in a boot and currently have 1 week left to go in it. I sometimes walk around my house without it on just to see how it is progressing and it feels for the most part fine when i walk around but sometimes i get slight pain. I am just wondering what you think. Do you think i will need cuboid manipulation or go through PT?

I go trail running and often step on protruding surfaces/rocks/roots and after a few runs I have noticed this pain develop. It is now is much worse, especially when I toe off hard / try to run faster. What can I do to determine if it has moved upward, and what can I do to manipulate it in that case for relief? Will the Lacrosse ball still help?
@CatalystPT

Brian Ayers so you may have a raised cuboid which does happen but less frequently. With a raised cuboid treatment forces should be projected down. Rolling over a foam roller or lacrosse ball will worsen symptoms. My best advice is find a practitioner that can adjust it so it stops throwing off your foot mechanics.

@CatalystPT

Niamh Balfe with a superior displacement you would have pain extending to the 4th and 5th toes. Inferior displacement travels to the side of the ankle below the lateral malleolus. @CatalystPT

Chad Prillwitz if you broke bone you definitely strained muscle and ligament tissue. hypothetically a cuboid fracture is better than a peroneal muscle rupture bc the cuboid bone will heal and the peroneal rupture would need to be surgically reattached.

Thanks for the great video! I got pain in exactly the cuboid area after running (my first run in many months). But I dont think that the cuboid bone has "dropped". I feel pain when rolling by foot on a tennisball and a sharper, stronger pain when walking. But can this pain also be caused by smaller internal stress injuries inside the bone, due to weak muscles/ligaments around it? I need to go hiking tomorrow...planning to tape my foot if I can. How long can these minor injuries take to heal, and how much pressure can you put safely on the foot while it heals? (Ill go see a physiotherapist ofc if it doesnt get better). Thank you very much=)

Sanne Bergman the cuboid is a amphiarthrosis joint meaning it slides on the bone it neighbors. It does not have any muscle attachments but is held in place with ligaments and the position proper position of it neighbor bones. It can get stuck with the use of improper footwear as well as trauma such as ankle sprains. It is painful to fix so when you roll a ball under it but you have to maintain that pressure. That’s why I highly suggest getting it adjusted bc it will be uncomfortable briefly vs rolling it on a ball or foam roller for extended periods. Healing time depends on severity of the issue. Anywhere from 1-4 weeks.

I’ve had pain in this area for years and not one professional has been able to tell me what is wrong! YET THEY ALL WANT TO SELL ME CUSTOM ORTHOTICS! I think you have explained my painful problem! I have one question! If this has been CHRONIC, could the pain extend distally and out towards the 3, 4 and 5’th Metatarsal bones? This is my experience and watching your video, it explains everything! I am also feeling quite certain, that the metatarsal bones would ALSO be effected by the displacement of the Cuboid, and after years of being stuck, would cause the pain extending further as I explained. I will try your suggestion and look for your reply! Thank you so very much!

Sheila Smith the cuboid have a junction with the 4th and 5th metatarsal. Although the orthotic may prevent this type of episode from occurring it doesn’t usually correct it. Sounds like a you may need to get the foot manipulated/mobilized and then utilize proper shoe wear or corrective orthotics.

Payel Ghosh standing on a foam roller barefoot can help get those little bones moving but you do have to strengthen those muscles with some weighted towel crunches to prevent the joints from stiffening up again. If that doesn’t do it you may need the actual foot adjustment I perform on the video. Lastly, your shoes may be not form fitting to your foot structure. I had x-rays on my problem foot and was told they are normal. Is that sufficient to rule out a displaced cuboid? My pain is not that sharp/intense - maybe 4/10 - but it's ongoing and is over a large lateral area including where you drew.
@CatalystPT
5 жыл бұрын
Paul so not that sharp/intense may be that you have a high pain threshold. Unfortunately, xrays would only work if you had it done on both feet and then had someone compare sides. If you have pain where I drew, the specificity of being cuboid involvement is high. Now that a fracture is ruled out you should have the cuboid adjusted, you’ll notice the difference immediately once you put weight on your foot again if the adjustment was done correctly.
