When I was in 6th grade, we had to write a report on an autobiography by someone we admire & that inspires us. I wrote mine on the book, "Mr. Cub". Got an A+

My god I loved this so much. Ernie hugging Dusty, talking to Maddux, big hug for Sammy Sosa, and then Pat explaining how he avoids using the words "no hitter" and then Ernie in the booth with Ron Santo. I can't express how happy this video makes me

I grew up a lifelong 3rd-generation Cubs' fan. I grew up with slammin' sammy and those were exciting days, so excuse me if this is controversial, but Sammy Sosa was not half the player Ernie Banks' was. Ernie Banks' is absolutely hands down an all time great in this sport of baseball. To see him speak with Cubs' and MLB legend Greg Maddux and sit down with former teammate and absolute legend Ron Santo was such a joy.

Wow. What a great video. Hidden behind all that enthusiasm was a man who had some troubles like the rest of us, but he INSISTED on bringing joy and warmth to everyone he met. I love Sammy, but aside from their mutual love of the game and HR counts, Slammin' Sammy can't hold a candle to Mr. Cub when it comes to being a good teammate and humble person. I think of this year, 2004, when shortly after this video was made, Sosa had the corked bat, the whole team imploded (Kent Merkur calling up the press box to threaten Steve Stone) and Sosa walked out on his team the final day. There was so much promise that year. Ugh. Even w/2016, I'll never get over 84, 03, and 04.

I have a record on the broadcast history of the Cubs narrated by Jack Brickhouse. On that record is an interview with Ernie from his first spring training in the major league camp. This was not the Ernie Banks we all know. This guy was shy and quiet. You would have to twist his arm, and you still couldn't get him to say more than two words. That was before he developed his Ernie personality.
