Many people in active addiction loose their connection to their faith and culture. Sunrise tries to reconnect our patients with their Native American heritage and inspire them to learn and explore their culture. The Grass Dance originates from the Plains Indians, specifically the Omaha-Ponca and Dakota Sioux. Grass Dancers perform this to pay respects to departed ancestors and to ask Mother Earth for strength. The movements of the dance mimic the swaying of grass in a light breeze. Whatever a Grass Dancer does on one side of his body, he must repeat on the other side of his body to keep the symmetry and illusion of grass swaying in the wind. Although the Grass Dance is a freestyle type of dancing, dancers must follow the changing beat of the drum and stop when the music does, with both feet on the ground.
