From a long term commercial service standpoint, the Isuzu 4BD1T or the 4BD2T which is related but uses a different IDI injection system than the 1T ot 4BT is a better engine. Those Isuzus are built like farm tractor or big rig 18 wheeler engines. If you ever actually manage to wear one out, you just replace the bearings, seals, and cylinder sleeves with basic hand tools. At worst get your crank journals reground and polished and the valves ground or replaced. The Cummins 6BT and 4BT, and the Navistar/International/Ford 6.9/7.3 aka DT444E engines are considered throwaway engines. Fuck one up, just get another, rebuilds are expensive because they require machine work at a specialist diesel shop the has the tools to do it. A 4BD1T or say an international DT466 or Detroit 60 series... Can go millions of miles, and when they need a rebuild if you're mechanically inclined and have good tools, you just do it yourself with an overhaul kit.

Interesting. I had a 1.5 VW and was able to get a cylinder sleeve for one that had been gouged by gasket bits. Rebuild was very cheap. I appreciate the perspective on these engines. And with a radiator like that, I'd love to put an Isuzu into something.

@@heinzletzte.6385 the the more common 4BD1T Isuzu engine is also direct injected. The less common 4BD2T is not. @@stevemcgee99 that may certainly be true, but a VW diesel is small and light enough any typical machine shop can probably do the work. A diesel truck engine in a pickup weighs like a minimum of 1100 lbs and is a big hulking thing, the diesel in something like a big rig is literally a ton or more. You need to go to a specialist to work on something like that, which is why they have "in frame" overhaul kits where the sleeves can be replaced without having to take the engine out of the truck.

Ford superdutys from 98 to 2011 came with a cummins 4bt then switched to the new electronic 2.8 and the 3.8 was an option. Would be nice to have 1 with the 4bt then another 2ith a 6bt since everything would work on the truck, unfortunately we got stuck with the 7.3, problematic 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7. Imagine a superdudy factory with a zf6 & 6bt. Why not they put the 6bt into f700's. When I put my 6bt from a 95 f700 into my 85 f350 Ibused the cab from the 700 since it was the same as the 80's bull nosevtrucks andvall the gages worked and ac. Bought the 700 cheap at auction with 32,000 miles on it.

I've got a 4bdlt I'm getting ready to put into a military M715. I can tell you with absolute certainty that there are vastly more adaptor options for the Cummins. Adaptors for the Isuzu are almost non existent. There were some people making adaptors in the past but doing my research I haven't found anybody currently making adaptors. There are some 4bd1t engines floating around with SAE #3 flywheel housings, early engines in domestic trucks and most industrial engines had them. If you have a SAE flywheel housing you can find a adaptor to fit pretty much any domestic engine. The vast majority of these engines have a "Japanese" pattern, which pretty much doesn't fit anything except the Japanese transmission that is bolted to it. That being said, some careful measuring and a trip to a machine should should net you a adaptor that will work. I currently have my parts at a machine shop to get an adaptor made to bolt up to a Spicer 3053a transmission. Was quoted a price of $500, which is actually cheaper than adaptors you can buy for say a Cummins.
