Our couch has flat arms and this causes a tendency to place drinks on them. Not good because of the condensation, not good because things can be knocked over. Something had to be done.
My solution was to build a cup holder that could receive a variety of sizes of drink containers so the user could secure any drink he or she needed to set down. My main focus was how to chuck in a wine glass such that it could not be accidentally knocked over since that would be the worse case of a drink being spilled.
More wood scraps came in handy here, just some pine from the big box stores, cut to length and joined with tall box joints. I think this would be neat to make with some fancy dovetail joints, but I'll leave that to somebody more talented.
The main issues encountered so far: This is a solution for my situation; not all couches can use such a design because of the variety of arm shapes & styles. The cork has breathed a little in the seasons and it's not quite as snug now with bottles; still impossible to knock down accidentally, but it's not a tight fit anymore and there's something not satisfying about that. It's inherent of a project that's over-engineered like this. A much simple solution could be created to receive a variety of sized container rather than this tiered system. Again, it works for me and it solved the problem I needed solved, but something more elegant exists out there I'm sure.
