@Stacy_Smith

Bob Piff DEALER CARS ARE ALWAYS SOLD WITH A GAP!!!! Luckily I had gap insurance on my loan, but I bought an '06 Mustang Convertible in 2015 and my TOTAL payments for my car was $400 a month. $50 was for gap insurance alone + warranty + interest + principal PLUS THE ADDITIONAL COST OF FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE! Someone ran a stop sign 11 months after I bought the car and the insurance said they only covered $8000 for my $12000 car that I bought for $14000 after gap, warranty and interest. They cover "fair market value" NOT "retail value". Basically "fair market value" is the trade-in or private party price. I got back $500 after gap insurance kicked in so . So if I'm going to get driveway price when SOMEONE ELSE wrecks it, then I'm going to buy it from a driveway. The dealer covered the clutch when it went out, but when my back glass started separating from the top they said my warranty didn't cover that and it can't be repaired, the entire top had to be replaced. Thankfully the wreck occured BEFORE I got a chance to fix it. I could have bought a driveway car for $8000 and a new clutch would have been around $1000 installed and a new top with a LIFETIME WARRANTY $1400 installed. Another thing: I have always been a good driver I taught my wife how to drive 15 years ago and she has NEVER been in an accident that was her fault. I have been a truck driver for 14 years WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT! I NEVER get full coverage! With a loan you are FORCED to buy full coverage. So after my down payment, NOT COUNTING the extra money spent on so called "full" coverage I lost about $4500 WHEN I'M NOT THE ONE THAT RAN THE FUCKIN' STOP SIGN!!! Throw in the fact that I am paying someone else to fuck me when I need them and it's even worse. Oh... new car replacement? The upcharge on that is so high you'd be better off putting that extra money in a savings account instead! Bottom line: Wait till tax time or make "pretend payments" on a car bought and paid for then buy a driveway car! Even if you have to put money into it, the money you save on interest, gap insurance, warranty + fine print out of pocket repairs, and full coverage will still be higher than repairs than the driveway car without a warranty and liability coverage! Food for thought: An AAMCO transmission with a lifetime warranty is $2400. So if you have to put one in that's a part that you never have to worry about. Same goes with any other warranted part installed. Every part you buy for a driveway car is a NEW part that you don't have to worry about. (This advice does not apply to any Ford Diesel truck manufactured AFTER 2003! The new Powerstrokes with all the California shit on 'em are junk! Find a late 90's, 2000, 2001, or 2002, desert truck with a 7.3 and rebuild that and get Line-ex body armor sprayed on it.)

Dealers do some of the same shit. They buy junk from auctions, dress it up so it looks better then sale it. Of course the auto dealer association doesn't want people buying from individuals because the association wants a cut of the profits. I worked as a mechanic for a mainstream Big Three dealership, as well as independent shops. There is a reason we refer to the dealer, as the stealer. Unfortunately, this is a business where ethics are mostly not of the highest calibre. You have to check the history of any vehicle independently, no matter who is selling it, except perhaps from a family member, friend or neighbor. Of course "the stealers" don't want anyone muscling into their own self-regulated duck hunt - which is why this segment features their own hypocritical warnings to buy only from them. Buyer Beware. By the way, every salesman I know has watched - and enjoyed - Kurt Russell's Used Cars movie, probably the most cynical but accurate cinematic comedy about our industry.

Used car buying 101: Before the dealing starts, it is all about connecting 3 dots & is very simple: Take a look at the VIN number on the car's windshield or door; ask the individual who is selling the car to produce the car's title; then ask the same individual to produce his/her ID. Those 3 dots have to be connected, 1. VIN number, 2. Same VIN number in the title, 3, the name of the person in the title has to be the same individual who you are physically talking to who ultimately produced his/her ID... Until those 3 dots are connected then you can start talking about engine, millage, paint, money, etc...

My mom just bought a car from a guy that dont have a car lot. He does have a licence n all the paperwork to prove were the car came from n even the carfax. The car did have a salvage title , but it was a low mileage. He took pictures of all the damage n what he did to it. We got a really good deal on a car that would have cost much more if it didn't have a salvage title. He even gave us the vin so we could check if it was stolen. I recommend if anyone buys from the street, private seller or anyone for that matter do your research before any cash is exchanged. I had a dealer sell me a truck that needed a motor n didn't tell me. I threatened to get lawyers involed because of the lemon law n they made it right after that . If you know how to buy used cars you will not be ripped off. I Carfax every vehicle, inspect under the hood, and most of the time, take it to a mechanic that I trust esp if the engine was detailed. I only buy from private party or auctions. I've never bought a new car, have owned 7 used cars over 18 years and never bought a lemon. I'd rather walk, visit Hertz rental, take public transit, or rideshare than finance a car esp for a marked up beater at 18% interest with $500.00 down.

This does NOT tell the WHOLE story. Yes, buyer beware when you go to purchase anything, anywhere, private or otherwise. Those laws are more to protect the revenue of the car dealers than they are to protect the citizens. A salvage title is for vehicles that the insurance company feels is too much money for them to spend fixing. So, the insurance company gives you a fraction of the vehicles worth and they don't bother to tell you that you now need a salvage title to get your money from them. Good luck getting your money they owe you if you trade in your vehicle without that salvage title. It's a racket that is protected by the law. phfff!

And what a licensed used car dealer is going to do something about it after they sell you a lemon? How different is a used car dealer that got his car from the auction and a honest hard working person that got his used car from the auction and is selling it not for couple thousand bucks profit but maybe for a couple hundred? The question that these interviewers should ask these cops is, how do you think "the people" feel when you give them a ticket because they didn't turn on their turn signal? I can guarantee when I get a car from the auction my mindset is i'm getting it for myself so let me get the best one possible. A used car dealer? Let me get the cheapest one, and price it 5 times its worth.

The supposed real McCoy Car dealers aren't any better! Their are honest and dishonest sellers everywhere. The car buying experience from dealers are among the worst. #1 is buying a house. 2nd is buying a car, new or used. The Buyer Beware should apply when buying from ANYONE. Do you homework. Many Car dealers (not all) take advantage of buyers legally every single day and get away with it. Once again. DO YOUR HOMEWORK when buying from ANYONE. 1-Do a VIN car check! there is a 'research' website that is FREE! 1b-Try to stick to a one owner car, or max of 2-3 owners. The less, the better, and notice the time between each transaction. AVOID a car that's been to a auction. (NOT all VIN check sites will display this...) 2-Title search if possible, they vary from State to State. This is different than a VIN check. 3-Ask as many questions as possible. A good honest seller should be able to respond to any and all prudent questions. Questions to asks: How long have they owned it is a basic. It reveals a lot. If they respond with ... "About a year" Or "I just got it, but what I really wanted/needed is a SUV....truck" possible BS. 4-USE YOUR COMMON SENSE. TRUST, But verify. 5-Take it a 'mechanic', even if it sets you back $100 or so. They may not be able to spot everything, but it's something. 6-Do your research on the vehicle. Some cars are great, but some model years may have had excess recalls and certain inherent design flaws with the engine or transmission.

Get a carfax. Check the vin at the tax office. Have a good mechanic check everything out. Spend a little bit of money to protect yourself, because you are making an investment that will cost many times that. The politicians saying that they are "protecting the good people of Albuquerque" wouldn't give a damn if you bought the same pile from a dealer. The government would have gotten a bigger cut. That being said, if you buy a used car from anyone, anywhere, you should fully expect there is something wrong with everything on the car.

I've seen junk thats totalled and had a friend taken for a $1000 bought from curb side SALESMEN and got home and it was pissing oil, i said maybe a double seal on pil filter since you said he changed it. so he had it towed to a GARAGE and come to find out, the whole under carriage was all banged up hole through the oil pan floors banged in like this car was off roading big time. the dealer put silicone in the hole of the oil pan and obviously let it dry before adding oil to it. 15 miles later it blew out. and the car was a total loss, now my other griend hit a rock in his driveway and put a hole in pan on vw Passat 2.0L, i said buy 2 cans of degreaser and J-B WELD, we cleaned the hole out as best as possible, wasted both cans and jad pil plug drain out with it jacked up of course, let it dry for 10 minutes and mixed up J-B WELD AND applies to hole and did it like body work. we even scratched up the pan and made some grooves so it could grad to, it worked and he put another 150,000 miles on car and sold it for $1500 after driving it for 4 year's, it had close to 300,000 miles on it, but thats then and i wouldn't buy a VW now, cost of EVERYTHING is top DOLLAR to buy any 1 part you need. They want some of they money back from fine. my son's grandfather bought him 1 for graduation and i said say no and look for another BRAND, he tpok the $10,000 Passat with 58,898 on it from a DEALER and no WARRANTY and now COSTING $1250 for REAR MAIN OIL SEAL LEAK. BUT THEY MAY FIND OTHER TJINGS THAT NEED FIXING THATS NOT INCLUDED LIKE THE TURBO, THEY LET GO ABOUT 60,000 MILES, look it up on KZitem, on 2009 or newer 2.0L Turbo, junk, he owned the car since july 5th and still haven't showed dad (me) the car guy that fixes all cars EXCEPT VW'S inly because of my griends car with oil pan we also down tje road replaced a right upper ball joint, well 3 mechanics and 1 machinest to make us a tool to fix the car, wont ever work on them again AFTER THAT. he just bought another 1 but got stupid CHEAP because its a DIESEL and 5 or 6 speed not sure but got 60 miles to 1 gallon but he babied it he said. he don't care abput polluting as long as he's getting 45 plus per a mpg of diesel fuel.

When in doubt buy from a state licensed dealer, they can always be tracked down and you would be far less likely to buy a stolen or salvaged vehicle.

i bought my car back from the INSURANCE gor $281, the cost it was worth at the time i got rear ended, but if i took hitch off, then you couldnt tell it was in any accidents, that's my car, the only reason it got totaled was i replaced from struts and they let go only 6 months later, so they WARRARTY them, but i had to have it aligned, well i replaced them just after the accident not knowing they were gonna total it. so I replace the struts under warranty and had it realigned the second alignment showed the rear was off bye enough that it was out of whack so it meant the unibody got bent enough, you can't see anything I had a utility trailer on during accident that took the hit and that meant my hitch and utility trailer tpok the hit not my van, was never touched with the truck that hit the utility trailer I ended up driving the vehicle and still have it for three more years and that happened in 2007, then finally parked it because of mileage and having alternator or starter issues and battery issues at 200,000 miles vehicle I bought brand new in 1999 just got the scrap it now. they tried to give me $900 fpr my VEHICLE but i had $3000 worth pf RECEIPTS over 2 year's along with a new reman factory TRANSMISSION installed, struts, tires, pil change, i SHOWED the insurance GUY bills paid from the company that put in the struts at $500 then $400 for tires from 6 month's back plus had timing belt replaced with other things at a friend's GARAGE which gave me a deal but wrote out what it should of cost incase I traded it in because i was talking about it. well it helped me out big time., he made copies of RECEIPTS and adjusted the cost because i refused the offer and said i just put that into it.

so just because they dont have a fancy office or a garage to fix it on site makes them shady? what if i had 15 cars in my front lawn for sale? i'm not proclaiming to be a business. you're purchasing from a private party who happens to own a lot of cars that they're trying to move. since when has making a living become a crime?

I'd like to know how someone bought a stolen car? That shouldn't happened if the seller has the title. I wonder if the person paid for the car and drove off without doing paperwork? Depending on your state laws you should legally transfer the car into your name or get a transit tag if you buy a car out of state. You can do this at the DMV or tag store, that should take care of that issue.

Hearing comment from an "auto dealers association" on curbstoning? A little biased, don't you think? Perhaps it would be nice to not always hear from people who actually have a motive to say things for self-interest or in the interest of their clients. You don't need to go to a auto dealership association jerk for comments on this practice.

Willie Jenkins but that gets the views. Here in Australia everything there's a firearm related incident. It's always the antis "expert's" to tell us how horrible this "laser tipped, child killing, death machines" are. When the pro guns get a voice it's very short and diced up to hell to make them look crazy

Inspect the vehicle and look at the title for a *. If you are still not sure run a carfax. Just because it has a salvage title doesn't mean it's junk. It means you pay less than book for the vehicle or move on to the next one if your afraid of it.

they missed the definition of a curbstoned title. thats when the original owner simply signs the title, hands it off to you, and you sell it with the original owners' title without you ever actually owning the car. If you flip cars for cash, its good money. you skip paying taxes at the dmv and you skip the law for selling only 4 cars

You can sell about 3-4 cars a year with no license depending on the state or town. After 3 it's considered a business & like everywhere in the world you then need a license & business insurance & further more pay income tax on the profit. Most gypsy salesman pay for the cars but they don't sign the title & they wait to find a buyer. Once they find that buyer then the buyer sings the title and goes to the DMV o apply for the registration title plates. Then this way they can sell more than 3-5 annually without showing any type of history. Most car dealer employees do this on the side & it's illegal.

All you need to do is take a photo of the VIN then check to see if all the other VINs stamped into the car body all match. You can find diagrams showing the location of the VIN numbers online. Do your home work, Google the VIN number and check everything you can find online. The best info will come from the previous owners and car dealers, call them all. This what everyone should do on every used car they are considering buying. Never ask the seller for advice, you do all the work and make all the decisions.

CARFAX is what honest dealers do. They run the vin# if the vin doesn't match the vehicle they have, they call the law. No righteous dealership will sell a vehicle that could potentially kill a customer. Salvage is salvage. It is not roadworthy.

What gets me too is that these places are 100% illegal yet the cops will drive right by it while pulling someone over for driving 5 mph over the speed limit. Gotta love the selective enforcement of the law. I guess because a speeding ticket is easier to write than busting actual criminals.

Also! I have bought trashy cars from big name dealers like Nissan that start from A & end with C, in Phx... In 2006 I bought a Jeep Commander with 30kmiles that gave me problems with suspension & transmission from the first week...The dealership said they are normal wear & tear problems and are not covered by extended warranty. I had to file for bankruptcy in order to get out of that bad loan. Chrysler stopped production of Jeep Commanders after 2009.

I purchased a used car from a big dealership and paid on it for 3 years only to find out the car was stolen, guess what the dealership offered me, they offered to give me back my $500 down payment and call me a cab, or.... I could take another car similar and start paying on it. I took the car and drove it a couple months, then when the water pump went out I just drove it until in seized up and almost caught fire and called them and said I didn't want it anymore. The following week I purchased my first band new car... IROC Z-28 with T-tops and leather.
