There was a girl at my school who wouldn't talk to anyone throughout all of elementary school. Most people, actually everyone, just "forgot" she existed and went about their day, but I made it a point to smile and say hello to her every single day, even though she said nothing back. After an entire year of saying hello to her, she finally let out the quietest "hi", but it was such a beautiful moment. I just smiled and said "see you tomorrow!", but I was so happy for her on the inside. She wouldn't talk to anyone except for her family and two children at school who were family friends. Despite this, she always said hi to me after that first time, and I'll always remember her!

This "shyness" should be dealt with in a space that these kids can "open up" when they are ready. I know if I was put through that as a kid and was forced to speak when I didn't feel comfortable I would of completely shut down. Extroverted people don't understand what its like to be the quiet type and to feel uncomfortable in social interactions and expects everybody to be like them. We need to look inside these kids and understand their perspective and work with them accordingly to what holds them back. A structured environment where they feel safe, where they can take the time to speak no matter how long it takes to get their words out. Need to develop socially with their peers and then other people they don't know. Every tiny step is a huge step for them, consistently is the key.

@@canavero4288 For this scenario, it seemed to help them. Y’all do realize there’s different therapies for selective mutism right? People actually have to try these out on kids to see if it would be the best thing to help them and overall I think it did a good job. For me I had extreme sever mutism that affected the relationships with my parents because I didn’t talk to them either, they never encouraged me to talk or took me to therapy to help me and that ended up with me going to school bullied because I rarely talked. I wish my parents helped me like that because now as an adult with social anxiety, I’m going to therapy and it had helped me tremendously, probably could’ve helped me not go thru all of the trauma I had throughout my life if I did went as a kid.

The sad thing is that a lot of people don’t even know that social phobia is a thing. They just think it’s purely anxiety or shyness when it’s much more that that. It’s called a phobia for a reason. It can be clinically diagnosed.

Last year, if i got called in class to answer a question, I would blush. But this year for some reason, if i get chosen, i blush, my heart beats super fast and loud, and my eyes would tear up, if they kept asking, I might cry, but luckily my teachers notice and ask someone else... Speeches are coming up for me and I dont know how I can go through it. Last year, i wasnt this bad, and I almost cried, but made it through, this year it has gotten worse, and i might cry...I hope i dont as a group of girls in my class bully me, and If i cry...itll get so much worse... I have anxiety. I remember a couple of occasions with a math teacher I had in 10th grade and it was one of my worst school years alongside 7th and 8th grade. This math teacher has made me break down into tears multiple times. All but one of those times was I able to keep myself from breaking down in the middle of class. This one time, I just couldn't take it. He made me go up to the board 3 times. First time I went up, he told me to work out the question on the board. Second time, he told me to go up again because it was wrong. At this point I was extremely embarrassed and just wanted to hide. Third time, he didn't ask me to go up again but he made me feel extremely embarrassed for getting the answer wrong again and that was when I finally just broke down. I had two friends sitting on both sides and they were trying to comfort me, which I really appreciate that. There was many other occasions like this, but I would cry at home and not in class. It was honestly a miserable year. He also had the audacity to say he was trying to help me when the school year ended, but that's just not how you go about it, ya know?

I'm 18 and have severe social anxiety and the worst part is that, with me, it increased with time, like, when I was a kid, I was quite confident and would easily get along with other kids but as time passed by and I became older, my social anxiety became worse especially when I'm talking to girls that's when the anxiety really kicks in and because of that, girls don't feel comfortable around me. I don't know what they think but the worst part of being socially anxious is that people take it in a wrong way and perceive you of being rude or showing attitude when you just can't talk. Now I'm 18 and my anxiety has sparked to a whole new level. I just want to feel normal in public like a normal human being and live a normal fucking life 😢

I’m a triplet, and I’m terrified of socializing, so I’ve grown almost entirely dependent on my sister because we’re in the same grade and everything. Like, when she stopped playing soccer, I stopped playing soccer. I have to sit with her at lunch, and it’s so awkward because I’m too scared to talk to her friends even though they’re all really nice to me. If she’s not in the same class as me, I don’t have anyone to be pair up with for projects. Everyone gets super frustrated with me because they don’t understand what’s going on in my head. I can’t do anything on my own, and I’m going into my junior year of high school. I’m going to have to learn how to become independent before I go off to college on my own, but I don’t know how.

it makes me so happy to read through these comments and feel like they mirror EXACTLY how I feel. I don't have selective mutism but definitely social anxiety. My parents told me I didn't once which fucked with me for a long time and made me ask myself if I was an introvert or if I was just shy, but I'm not. I want to talk to people but sometimes I just can't get the courage to. Walking up to people is probably the hardest thing for me to do whether I actually know the person or not and it all has to do with feeling like I have to have something important or relevant to say. In reality I probably don't need to but I can't convince myself of it. There's only been one person who's shown me I don't need a reason to approach them, I just can and it'd be ok. I pushed them away for a while because I felt like they were just being nice and didn't actually care to talk to me but every time I'd see them and I felt like talking, I'd try to go up to them and was met with a very welcoming atmosphere and this 'act' never fell. Since then we see each other a lot less due to schedules and I've realized that just because they're welcoming does not mean they care because I can often say something loud and clear and they won't notice whatsoever and they don't actually try to talk to me much anymore. But by sheer luck I have another group of friends that I'm trying to overcome this stuff with. It's not perfect and my brain still tells me they don't care, but they've told me they do and every attempt I make to talk to them is met with some form of conversation. I like to just jump into conversations they're having when I hear something I can add on to, but I'm hoping I can gather the confidence to approach them more (which may be harder because I have a crush on one of them, lol).

Being heard and not judged is so important. I feel like one of the biggest reason people opt to stay quiet is because... speaking is hard enough. And when they do muster enough courage to finally speak they get ignored, bc they were quiet or judged cos they dont speak more or get told their opinion is stupid... and that create more fear. So this group is amazing in that the kids have a safe environment to practice in where they are always heard and appreciated

Man these poor kids... As someone who was born with social Anxiety I completely understand how these kids feel. I'm 17 and was officially diagnosed at 8 years old. Everyone before thought I was just "extremely shy". I wouldn't speak at school, eventually i would slowly get used to the environment and I would talk to only specific people (they would have to start the conversation, of course). But honestly I feel so so terrible for these kids not only do they have to talk (I usually feel sick, nauseous, and the worst butterflies I'm my stomach) but they are being filmed and put on television. This would make me feel even worse. Of course every person is different but I do think they should possibly go to a therapist, and get a proper diagnosis instead of being forced on camera to talk.

I was veryyyyy shy like these kids. I know exactly how it feels like and how uncomfortable it gets. Honestly this might not feel “right” because we empathize with them and it looks very forced but getting out of your comfort zone really really helped me. There is nothing wrong with these kids at all, they just need encouragement to gain confidence! It took me a long time to gain my confidence and socialize, but I had understanding people around me that was totally fine if I was shy or didn’t speak much. But it had to start with myself, I wanted to talk to people and become better at socializing so I took those scary opportunities to speak up. I now LOVE socializing and helping people.

This is so generalized- people w/ selective mutism aren’t scared of talking to people, they want to talk to people but relapse into mutism because they’re afraid of the triggers; of having a panic or anxiety attack, which is terrifying for a child. Not saying that this doesn’t work, but instead of addressing what response they have from triggers, why, and helping them learn to cope and overcome them, they’re just teaching them to push past it. They end up never understanding how or why, so mutism can come back in that situation

I have it and I’m not going to bother typing another essay about it but: • Freeze response activates when you’re expected to talk • Similar to social anxiety with a few differences • Can be misunderstood/misinterpreted It’s getting worse every year. It’s gotten to the point where I’m fussy with my appearance, and so conscious, now to the point I stay home for the tiniest things, though of course I value my learning but my anxiety and fear of judgement prevents me from going to school - it might be hard to understand if u don’t have it, but I hope someone can relate to me ¿

I can definitely relate to these two kids. I had very similar situations at their age, I wouldn’t speak for the whole school year. I really don’t think you could’ve “cured” me in just a week by making my socialize. My therapy took about three years before I actually made a long lasting friendship that I still have to this day. A week isn’t enough and therapy should be long lasting, that way the person can slowly grow, I mean that should be common sense.

It could be. Because there's many things that could be the factors, also it's still depends on how severe the phobia and/or anxiety is. But yeah, 1 week is pretty short and have pretty low chance to get it done with that amount of times. still, it could happend. Anyway, have a nice day 😊

I wish I could see him but I left queens and the P.S 21 school.
