Actually silicones aren't difficult to remove. They are just synthetic oils, and any surfactant that will remove an oil will remove them as well. Silicones can be broken down into 2 categories. Volatile and non volatile. Volatile silicones will evaporate within a few minutes or hours and non volatile silicones will remain on your hair until your next wash day. Silicones have often gotten a bad rep because of the most commonly used silicone, dimethicone, which has a dry skin feel to it. Products containing it would make your hair feel like a dry foot. Leaving many to think silicones will dry your hair out. Over the years companies have gotten better about adding other emollients to their products that contain dimethicone to combat that dry feeling. But there are other silicones that leave the hair feeling silky. My favorite is phenyl trimethicone. There was also the issue of high molecular weight dimethicone weighing down curly hair and temporarily preventing it from curling. Which would be beneficial for straight styles. Unfortunately high molecular weight and low molecular weight dimethicone, are both labeled dimethicone. So you wouldn't know which version you were getting without trying the product. Silicones are added to shampoos for slip and added conditioning for people who may not use a separate conditioner. Conditioners are only necessary if the shampoo you're using has caused extreme swelling of the hair shaft due to friction between the anionic surfactants and your negatively charged hair. In other words, that stripped squeaky feeling. I often only shampoo my hair and will detangle with my leave in conditioner during the styling phase. Sorry for the long essay.

We love an educated sis! You broke that down so good, and I appreciate you for taking the time to do so! As I learn more and more about my hair, I realize all these "rules" don't apply to us. I can see how it can negatively effect a looser curl pattern in excess, but knowing the proper ways to remove them will keep it safe. I'm pinning this comment so everyone can refer to it as well! 🤎

There was also a scientific peer-reviewed study done that found that silicone does not add more build-up after the 5th use. No worries about "continuous" build-up.

Completely agree!! It annoys me when people are so anti-silicone, literally all you need to do is clarify after using them…that’s all. It’s really not that serious, just do what works for your specific hair.

@@Skne91 you listen to your hair. If it tells you it's time, you'll know. I wash weekly but if I feel a serious build-up, I wash midweek.

I agree, silicons aren’t the worst thing ever but I still try to avoid them just for that reason of needing to use a clarifying shampoo. I hate that responsibility 😫😂.. regardless your hair is flourishing 😍

I agree with you in regards to doing your research & make sure u educate yourself on what products you are putting in your hair. The reason why I don’t use sulfates/silicones/parabens & the other crap is because for most of my life I had relaxed hair & honestly I didn’t like my hair. It started really thinning out after I had my son. I was using any & all products (didn’t really pay attention to any of the ingredients) so I decided to stop relaxing & 9mths later I did the big chop. From there on I felt like using products w/out those ingredients works for me. I realized that before the issue wasn’t the products that I was using BUT not understanding the products I was using.. So I decided to look at the ingredients in doing so what I realized is that I was using a sulfate free shampoo(yay!) but my conditioner & stylers had silicones (multiple silicones) & that’s the reason my hair was lifeless & had so much buildup. I honestly thought I had a dandruff problem. So after I did my big chop I decided since silicones didn’t really helped my hair I want to try this “natural” hair products & see how it goes! I seriously love it & so does my hair… so I will continue to use products w/those ingredients! Thank you so much for all your videos they are very informative!

I tried to do the no silicone thing too and I went back to using silicones. Silicones makes detangling much easier which means less breakage and I don’t have to trim as often. I clarify every wash with a clarifier that doesn’t strip my hair. It works for me. But there are products without silicone that has slip as well. I feel lucky when I find them too. And I do think shampoo with silicones are weird too and I stay away from them.

I was anti silicone too because of YT but I'm past that now. I don't use a ton of them but a shampoo I really enjoy has a silicone. I've always been a clarifyer so I don't have issues.

So non water soluble silicones, do they have to be clarified out with a sulphate shampoo or can you use sulphate free shampoos to clarify them out

The natural hair community has scared everyone into not using silicones 🤦🏽♀️ I have started to use them now, but I try to keep it to one product, and make sure I clarify at least once a month.

I think people should use what works for there hair and not fall into all those rules they have floating around!Listening to all the rules on KZitem academy(curly hair community) or where ever can get overwhelming and it doesn’t have to be that way so I do what’s best for me and my hair
