Biggest advantage withstraight shaft edge besides line of sight is hand fatigue, curved edges require more hand and arm strength to stabilize as it aways wants to till toward you (rotate) as weight of tool is not in line but offset. On short run no problem, but in my case edging many hundreds of feet at one time it gets tiresome.

Hi Brad. Greetings from the Emerald Isle. Thanks so much for the video and comparison of the curved v straight shaft edger. I’m in the process of buying one and wanted to check out the pros and cons of each. Thanks to one of your commentators my mind is made up. Straight shaft edger for me because of the more solid internal workings. Keep up the great work and enjoy your summer. From a newbie gardener here in Ireland. Cheers. Joe

That depends on brand. For instance, both the ECHO PE-266 (curved) and ECHO PE-266S (straight) feature flex cables. Unfortunately, STIHL does not publish the parts manuals as public (at least not that I could find) so I can't comment on what they are made of. At least for ECHO however, both drive shafts and drive cables carry a lifetime warranty!

Is a flex cable better for the engine and the blade because it provides some cushioning if the blade hits a hard object whereas a driveshaft would have no way to dissipate any shock.

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use kzitem.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

I think the main reason curve trimmers and edgers are cheaper is because they use a flexible driveline while the straight shaft machines can have a solid driveline. Some straight shaft machines still have a flexible driveline though. Curved trimmers don't required a gearbox on the end so thats another reason curved trimmers are cheaper but both curved and straight edgers have gear boxes.

Big difference I see between your edgers is that the straight is the Attachment System and the curved is not. Without model numbers I can't tell what power head is used, but my bet would be the curved has a slightly smaller more "home consumer quality" head. Adding a bend to metal is always a more expensive manufacturing operation - not less expensive. I'm sure Echo buys their tubing bulk not as a finished part. An attachment system with its included attachment is always going to be more expensive than a non-attachment system due to the addition of the parts it takes to make a system attachable. I've got an older PAS-265 with the stringtrimmer and edger attachments. The 265 was purchased at a equipment supplier that services landscaping companies versus my older curved head trimmer that was purchased at HomeDepot. The quality differences between the two was significant. Spending a bit more for the higher quality unit was absolutely the right thing to do, the 265 has been a rock solid workhorse for me over the past 10 years where the curved shaft home-depot junker lasted 2 seasons (it's just me for home use, not a pro.) I found a similar difference in quality when I went to a backpack blower. Unless you use your small engines a LOT, save yourself some headaches and buy the expensive pre-mixed gas that comes in gallon cans - it won't destroy your carburetor unlike ethanol fuel (with or without some sort of stabilizer / ethanol neutralizing additive) does. Or find a source for quality non-ethanol fuel.
@CopperCreekCuts

Sorry for the confusion. They make attachment systems for both curved and straight shaft edger, so that is not actually a difference. It is just that I needed to display both and that is what I had.
@sloppyjoe6243
4 жыл бұрын
@@CopperCreekCuts I still agree with Walt over the less expensive for home use vs. commercial use. The straight attachment CANNOT be used on the less powerful PAS (225) head. Only the 2620 head can use the straight edger. I am certain that the components in the shaft and gearbox are bigger, more robust and need more power to use. I like your videos but truly this is the REAL difference between the two, not the insignificant points that you brought up in the video.

The explanation I was given - the higher cost of the straight-shaft machines - was due to the increased amount of moving parts - there are various gears and whatnot. with a rod going down the inside of the shaft housing connecting the trimmer to the motor, with sprockets and worm gears and the like at both ends. In the curved shaft it's a simple cable that runs down to the trimmer head. I think this is why you often don't see people putting saw blades on the curved shaft trimmers.
@CopperCreekCuts
6 жыл бұрын
And that is the same explanation I gave on a video last year about straight shaft vs curved string trimmers. The only rub with edgers is that if you compare the parts lists to a curved/straight shaft edger (same model, only difference is curved vs straight), the parts are the same! :O
@jacquesblaque7728
6 жыл бұрын
"sprockets and worm gears and the like at both ends" of straight-shaft? What are you talking about? Simple splined connection at engine/clutch, and bevel reduction gear with splined shaft conection at the tool-end. Way more durable than whippy-sloppy speedo-cable drive, IMO. No gear-reduction with curved, obviously.

All the debate on what makes a curved shaft cost less than a straight shaft trimmer. The reason is that the curved shaft edger uses a string trimmer gearbox. It shares all those parts with the string trimmer. A simple economy of scale a straight shaft edger doesn't have because of the angle of the gear set.

The only major difference I see between the 2 types other than the obvious, is the gearbox. Both have a pinion gear, but the ring gear is different between the 2 types. Curved uses a type of beveled gear, while the straight uses a double helical gear. I would imagine that this, is where the extra cost comes into play.

I had a Stihl rep tell me that it was the solid drive shaft. Apparently, the curved edger uses a flexible drive shaft, which is cheap to produce. You are correct to point out that the straight edger also requires a 90-degree gearbox, and this certainly adds to the price.

Is the straight shaft edger stronger than the curved?

Well, which do you prefer or do you just use them as needed since you have both? It seems you favor straight?

Yeah, there are lots of tight driveways I run into.

Great video! I debated on a straight or curved edger attachment for my Kombi unit, and settled on the curved, since it was half the price, and I like not being directly behind the line of flinging debris! Only concern is the durability....if it holds up, I'm thinking I will be happy with the curved over the straight shaft edger attachment.

Good reasoning. Yes, straight shaft gets you a lot dirtier for sure!

I wonder if the Echo 2620 25.4cc straight edger is discontinued. It’s not available on HomeDepot.com. I just bought the curved 225 but would much prefer the straight one. Maybe it’s just sold out because we’re in season

I thought they just released it earlier this year, so maybe they just don't have the supply? I am not sure, but great question!

Home Depot mostly sells the PE225. To really get one you should get it at an echo dealer or online

Is craftsmen edging blades good to use ?

Never used them but they are just pieces of metal, so not too much different about them other than wear rates.

straight shaft has more torque ( can even bend the blade ) better for first time edging .

Hey Brad. Any recommendations on a stick edger for 1/2 acre lawn? Thanks.

Lawn size doesn't matter so much for edger, more about linear feet. Even then it is a question of how often are you going to be edging. Every week? Entry level should be fine. Once every two months? Might want something with more power.

I like my curved shaft edger. I get a better view of what I'm edging, thus makes it easier.

Great video!!! I just got a Stihl fs56 curve shaft, I like it because I'm 5'7 and it's a shorter shaft then a strIt shaft, I got it for a hundred bucks it's like new, down the road I will get a 91 or 94. I hear they have more tork to get through dirt easier, but I'm happy with it, use it 1 time a season on a yard then string the rest of the season, but I'm sure I'll be happy with it, I got new blades coming, do they cut better with new blades? Thanks again for your videos!!!

I've never used one but have no reason to doubt it is a solid piece of equipment. 28CC seems like it should be able to handle pretty much anything.

My guess would be because that drive shaft doesn't have to curve around any bends. Thanks for watching!
