How would you use Siri announcements in your smart home?

Thanks for the video and the ideas, Adam. There are a lot of ways to convert a written phrase into a sound file of course, and I appreciate you sharing one of them. It makes for a "robotic" voice, but you can highlight text on a Mac then right-click it, choose services, and then choose "Add to music as spoken track" which will get you going in a hurry. You can replace it with a more natural sounding track later if you want. I know the point of your video isn't so much as how to create the audio file, but having your Homepods say things in automations, much like Alexa will do. For that I thank you.

Just another greedy grab by Apple forcing you to subscribe to Apple Music. It would be trivial to record an audio with your iphone/ipad, then set up a home automation to play that recording. But nope, you need to jump through hoops and pay them more.

You can completely skip the first part of capturing the audio from the iPhone and extracting on the Mac. On the Mac in the keyboard shortcuts settings, just enable the macOS service "Add to music as Spoken Track" then type the text you want and select all, right click, services > Add to music as Spoken Track. Just make sure your mac's system voice is set to the voice you want.

That's a great tip, didn't know that! It works great for a system voice, but not if you wanted to use your own voice. A good idea tho nonetheless!

Thank you for the in-depth video on how to set this up. I totally agree Apple should make this a lot easier do. One Thing I noticed on your automation is that it will always run during the time you set regardless of who opens the door. It would be great if you could have a way for it to detect who is opening the door. I will be adding some of these for water leak sensors as I have lots spread throughout the house. I also have 4 exterior doors and I will be setting up alerts for when the doors have been left open for more than 5 minutes and the HVAC system is still on. I will probably think of some more use cases as time goes on.

I'd add a big word of caution with the 'sync library'. I tried this one and boy did it mess up my music collection. If you've got a big collection use with extreme caution. Otherwise, great video. It's crazy that you can't just do this out of the box with shortcuts.

Don't understand why you need an Apple Music subscription to play audio in your automations. I have a temp sensor in my freezer and a notification set if temp rises above 30 degrees. Got the idea when I opened my freezer one day to get something and noticed items were defrosting. So I put an Aqara temp sensor and set notification. Having my HomePods giving verbal notice would have been great. Good video by the way, easy to follow directions.

@@AdamsTechLife is it possible for someone with a Mac to send me a custom saying and me add to my automation? I don’t have a Mac. The only thing I can think is to give them my log in info, have them do it, and move to my Apple Music account. Then log out. Any other way? Thanks 🙏🏼

@AdamsTechLife
11 ай бұрын
yeah..kinda. you'd need a HomeKit enabled security system and create automations to do this. aqara is the easiest one. but yes, if a door or something is opened between 12 and 6am, the system can alarm (if you want) and play an audible tone on your phone.

It seems that you have to have a FULL Apple Music subscription for this to work. Bummer. As for my announcements they are pretty standard ones, I use mine to tell me if there is water coming under the garage door, a water leak at my water heater, to tell me if my dryer is done with its cycle. My next one will be to tell me when my washing machine is done with its cycle. Thinking about another for telling me when someone messes with my mailbox to let me know if I have mail or not.
