I can imagine this being a perfect scene for a pirate film. The man with the beard is the pirate while the other chubbier dude is the merchant trying to protect his loot. It works so well too because he'd look perfect as a merchant and since he takes more of a defensive style.

it's choreographed, but choreography is often closely tied to true sword techniques for added realism, it seems the cutlass was used in a stylized manner similar to rapier fencing, but the stout, broad blade was used in a more brutal and direct way.
@MadCapMag

This looks nothing like what cutlass combat would have been. Rapiers are primarily for thrusting, whereas the cutlass is a shortened sabre. It would look much more like sabre combat.

Levi Fontaine It's not entirely implausible, especially considering the weapons they're using. If it were a standard backsword or long saber, that would be pointless, but because they're using cutlasses, there's a certain advantage to it. They're more likely to break their guards on the force of the sword alone, and that second hand might actually be necessary for some of those blocks to maintain the guard.
