What a great technique! If you aren't bothered about creating an aerofoil leave the paper on - that's 50% of your paper skinning done. If the paper will not easily peel off the fin, soak the paper with white spirit (a.k.a. mineral spirit, mineral turpentine, turpentine substitute) wait a couple of minutes and the paper will peel off no problem.

+Rik Dusk (Nocturnaldusk) I don't think I'd ever use a dremel to make a straight cut. I just can't see holding it steady without some sort of jig like a router. This method works just fine if you follow the example I used in the video. Hold your fingers the same way that I hold mine... it may be the difference in cutting your hand to the bone. I teach this method to my own kids, and they handle the knife just fine.

What about if there are tabs? Should we cut those separately and glue them on if our balsa sheet isn't long enough?

I'd first try to find a wider piece of wood.

Why not us the machine edge of the stock for the leading edge? Less cutting and less waste. In fact you can alternate (flip flop) the root edges against each other and get even more out of the stock with less cutting.

It is important to get the grain direction right so you get a strong fin that doesn't easily break.

So I have a question. Can I use a 24" nylon parachute in an estes executioner rocket instead of the plastic. I seem to have to many issues with plastic parachutes
