Yea thats way I do it too. I do leave a little more extra wood and not cut so close to the line to make more rood for knife shaping to the real size of the pattern.

Surely if you have a circular saw, a band saw and a scroll saw etc, then it is pretty obvious how to cut out blanks. It’s a lot more difficult to do it without power tools. Just very envious!

Great to watch. Can you tell me what’s in the glue, does it need white spirit to clean up?
@markdmaker3173

Sorry for the delayed reply. Somehow I missed it. Everywhere the glue is sprayed on the wood is wastewood. It goes into the trash. So no need to remove it. I also use glue sticks. Less of a mess and very easy to apply.

im new to whittling, would a scroll saw make the blank cuts also?

Thanks for your question. I have made planks with a scroll saw. But they’re pretty small like a hummingbird. I believe most scrolls souls are limited to an inch and a half to 2 inches in height. Can be done I’ve done it.

how much cost of your band saw?
@markdmaker3173

Thanks for your question. Band saws can run from $150 to several thousand dollars. The bandsaw I own was about $600. I see used bandsaw‘s online for $50 all the time. If you do not own a bandsaw you can always buy blanks from wood carving supply stores.

You said Basswood is a hard wood??????????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ I’ve always thought basswood is a very soft carving wood softer than Limewood!
@markdmaker3173

Thanks for your question. Yes, basswood is considered a hardwood but it has very little grain making it easy to carve. I have never carved lime wood before but I’ve been told that it is identical to basswood. Tupelo is a very soft wood, so soft and light that a knife does not cut it very well do you need a rotary tool.

To simplify it, start off with clay. Get used to three-dimensional form first before you start carving wood.

Would a scroll saw suffice for cutting blanks this size? I'd be doing mainly smaller carvings. approximately 2"x2"x6. I wanted to cut down on some of the time and guesswork in the rough out process. Just a bit unsure of whether it would be the appropriate investment. I can get a used 16" delta of skil online for pretty cheap ($50).

Thanks for your question. I have cut out hummingbird blanks on a scroll saw no problem. I would look into how much height clearance the saw has. You could always scale down your carvings to miniature size which would definitely work.

What size blade was on the 2nd band saw?
@markdmaker3173
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question, sorry for the delayed response. My second bandsaw the 10 inch delta has a 1/8 inch blade in it. It’s the smallest one I can find and spins around just like a scroll saw blade. I installed a carter blade Guide designed for small blades and removed my guides to have that kind of flexibility.

Not really. But you do need to tape or fasten the sides back together to get an accurate cut on the other side. I appreciate your question. Thank you very much. I’m sure this will help other people as well.
