This is 1/16” balsa wood that I painted with water colors and then free motion “quilted”, with an all over leaf design. We learned that at this thickness a backing is probably necessary to maintain the integrity of the wood. Also, I misspoke. I meant to say if your stitching is parallel to the grain you run a higher risk of cracking, vs the stitching running perpendicular to the grain. When doing something like this the stitching runs in every direction. My next attempt will include a fusible backing.
