When feathers are to old, particularly the ones used for earings, what can I do? Thanks a lot!

You can wash them in a light solution of warm water and just a small dab of laundry detergent, the idea is to swirl them in the soapy water to prevent the quil from breaking. Then you swirl in fresh, warm water without detergent. Afterwards, lightly blow dry them on a warm setting. Again, take caution not to break the quil. After its dry, you can preen the feather webbing back together by running your thumb and finger up the feather, this will "zip" the fibers back together. You can then take a lil cedar oil and put a drop in your finger and thumb, lather it in on your finger tips, then again, run your fingers up as if you were preening the feather. This does two things, replenishes lost oils that keep your feather healthy, and cedar oil will repel mites and other bugs that will eat your feathers. Hope this helps!

Hi, I do not belong to an indigenous culture of any sort and would like advice on how to respectfully use feathers for a pirate costume. I never want to appropriate a culture especially with a costume so anything on the use and manipulation of feathers is what I'm looking for. I'm using macaw feathers and a tricorn hat.
