I have always bought OEM filters. Kubota, Toyota, Kawasaki, etc. There truly is a big difference in quality of oil filters. Thanks for the video.

I use only fleet guard filters on everything I own and from personal experience, you can tell at first glance the better quality, also nice to know fleet guard makes the OEM filters that was extremely helpful...

In Aviation we cut and open every oil filter at oil changes to see what is collected. Gives advance warning of problems that may be developing. I will be doing this with my new tractor!

Neil I agree to a point I have run Napa gold filters for years in my vehicles but I change oil every 3000 miles now on my case tractors I do use OEM do to the hard use and have had no problems so point is look at the application you are using and if it's sever duty stay OEM if just light duty and your service schedule is right on the times of the recommendation you will be fine with of brands just my thoughts

Neil a question for you. The bulk of my experience with a diesel engine was with a Mercedes 240D and it had a cartridge style filter that was much more substantial than the filters you have been cutting open. With the dirty environments that many tractors have to deal with I have been puzzled why they don't have more substantial filters. Can you comment? And thanks for the excellent videos. We are expecting to move to 21 acres and its likely a tractor is in the future.

it varies by the machine. The longer the change interval, the larger the engine, the bigger the filters are. The ones I am cutting open in these videos are for 20-30hp tractors.

What about hydraulic filters? I have a 234 hydro-static compact tractor 34 years old. It seems like a lot of trouble to change the filter every time. The oil is clean every time but the filter is always brown. Can I use the same oil again?

The tin in the bottom of the NAPA filter wouldn’t flatten out as the flow is pushing it against the bottom of the filter. If anything the filter material would blow out releasing any contaminants that were being filtered.

K&N's would most likely cost more than the OEM filters lol, they are good filters, but people complain about buying a filter that is slightly more expensive, much less a K&N.

Video idea: I have two different brands of tractors with different fluid recommendations. I'd like to simplify maintenance. What do I need to take into consideration when choosing to go against specific manufacturer recommendation. While I intend to use OEM parts and fluids what do I need to consider when using Kubota recommendations on New Holland or vise versa?

Missed the point on filters. The make up of the filter material is extremely important. The micron size that the filter stops is the most important aspect of any filter. A 5 micron filter will keep more harmful contaminant out of your engine than a 20 micron filter. Next is the amount of filter material used. The more square inches of material will allow more oil to flow. With the low micron filter this is important because as the filter is better at stopping contaminant more square inches of filter material will still allow more oil to flow. I personally like purolator pure oil filters. I don’t cheat on oil or filter. They are too important.

Well your explanation of filter quality types is fine. But a equipment owner that wants maximum life. Will use synthetic oil and or use a oil Analysis test. Which will show the long term consequences of cheap aftermarket filters.

Cartridge style filters can be worse if not using factory. They like to compromise the dimensions so they will go in diff. brands of vehicles. But really don’t fully fit or seal right in any of them.

Another big point... cutting open a filter or measurements of metal thickness, construction, etc really mean nothing. Real world testing is needed for a true representative of how a filter performs.
