I haven’t paid for a cut or color in many years. I used to spend way too much money to be unhappy with the result, and would always go home and “fix it”. Personally find it easier to figure out how to do it myself than effectively communicate what I want to someone else. Plus it’s fun and not that serious. Loving this cut on you!

Your hair looks lovely! I do think that the professionals can get a better result, specially because doing things on ourselves is harder, but that doesn't mean it will always comes out better, we've seen bad stories online! But even when it does comes out better, I do still love doing stuff on myself because I like the process, so nothing wrong with DIY hair experiments! We can all stop being so attached to perfection, specially when we're talking about someone else's appearance.

I went to so many hairdressers in the past, many of them were expensive and known salons, i always showed the same hair cut in the photo and every time i went out with something not even slightly close to what i showed them and i really looked idiotic for the next 2 months until my hair grew back. Usually the haircut was at least 10 cm shorter than the one in the photo and my hair after blow drying ended somewhere near my ears and I looked like i had a boy cut. Since last 6 years i have cut my hair by myself only and i have been always satisfied every time. None of my friends ever noticed that my haircuts weren't done in a salon. Last week i did the same bob cut which you did when you cut your extensions for the first time and my cut looked exactly like yours and i looked great.😊

I love playing with/cutting my own hair.. My aunt was a beautician and she used to teach me some basics for maintaining, but she always loved that I was willing to do anything with my hair. My answer to "what if you mess it up?" I would just say "I'll just shave it off and start over." 30 year old me did it.... I slightly effed up a pixie I did on myself. My friend offered to help earlier and I gave the same "nah I'm good. If I mess up I'll just shave it and try again later"....she didn't believe me. Sent her a picture later of my head shaved to a 4 and I rocked it long enough to try all new things, even bleached it and went blonde to match my kid for a while (i am a deep brunette. She thought I was cool 😊) Hair is too much fun to always play it safe.....plus... you ain't spending MY money, hun! Keep doing your thing, Stella!

Hi, actually I’m cutting my own hair since 2014 when it was really long (under the bra in the back) & didn’t want to pay more than 20€ for 1cm ... so I bought what I needed, scissors cape ... and watched a lot of KZitem videos, I just went back to the hairdresser a few times, but now it’s almost 40€ ... I had bad results with professionnal (bad layers), and good results or that I love by myself ! Even bleach, henna, manic panic by myself and good comments from people about it so 😊 Love your content since I found your channel, love the buzz cut era & that you’re always changing colors or lenght ! And congrats for the award 😉

I think a common person would think that the professional definitely knows more than them (for example I have no clue about those different methods of hair cutting/use of different tools) but if I can get a job done with my hair that I'm satisfied enough with, homemade is fine. Sure I could mess it up so badly people will criticize my hairstyle and then the question is do I care

About the professional versus at home topic. A real "Gone Wrong" situation happened to my hair just last week. So I love doing my hair and colouring it I have a lot of fun with it and since I studied art for a long time I also know my colour theory. So usually when I colour my own hair it turns out good. This time I wanted a really specific kind of muted-smoky-Rosy- brown-Violetty kind of color and I decided to treat myself since I had had a rough time and decided to go to a professional to get it done as a treat. I went there at the moment I sat in the chair I knew it was not gonna be good. I showed the hairdresser the pictures and she just said "well but that is just a picture" ... I mean of course what did she expect I would show up with as my reference? A severed head? And when she showed me her book of colours she didn't even talk about mixing them so I guess she would only use the premade shades. And of course none of them matched exactly what I wanted. I know I should have just walked away at that point but I am a really shy and introverted person so I just kept nodding and smiling until it was done. Now my hair is pretty bright red and darker than I wanted also darker than my previous color. Even though the colour we ended up agreeing on was brown (I thought if it came to it I could. fix it easier than the red or violet shades she showed). And I have a huge dark patch that goes all around my head. This is something I'm not comfortable fixing on my own since it is a lot of color correction, especially working with bleach on really specific spots (in the back of my head) so I will have to pay A LOT MORE on a professional colorist who knows what she does. She seems really good but she recommended for me to wait a couple of weeks for the dye to wash out a bit which means I will have this bright red colour for a while and I really don't like it. It is not my style or my personality so I am just really self-conscious about this hair colour all the time... Idk what the lesson here is I guess do your research on the hair stylist/colorist? trust your gut when you know it won't work and have the courage to stand up for yourself and leave before it gets bad?

I know several hair stylists who go to a salon to get their hair cut because they truly believe you CAN'T just cut your own hair. But a lot of them are never happy with what the salon does to their hair. On the other hand I know a lot of people who are no hair stylists and can't cut their own hair and go to a salon and also aren't happy with the results. I personally have NEVER gotten my hair cut by a professional. My mom cut my hair when I was a kid and a teen and when I was 14 I started doing it myself. Of course I gave myself some bad hair cuts but eventually I learned how to do it and make it look just the way I want it to look. And nowadays there are so many tutorials of any haircut and videos that explain the basic techniques so you could actually teach yourself how to properly cut hair. I am now doing my own hair for almost 22 years and I can't imagine giving away that feeling of indipendance. I have just one little tip: to learn actual professional techniques, try them on cheap wigs first. (You could use a wig head to put them onto OR put them on and cut it on your own head.) That's how I taught myself to cut my fav version of a shaggy bob and my fav version of a mullet (because those are styles I haven't found in a tutorial). Of course cheap wigs are hard to cut (the hair looks chopped and messy when it's cut) but you can still learn the techniques (how to use your sections and guides, which degree of elevation has which effect on the outline/shape of the cut etc.) and once you feel like you got it down, you can try on yourself. Or you're just very brave (or just don't care) and go all in and try it on yourself right away. It all depends on you. I really love being able to cut and color my hair. The only downside is: Impulse cuts and colorings are way easier to happen. [e.g. I have very light pale blonde hair and colored it brown last weekend just to go right back to my pale, light blonde because I forgot how weird my hair looks when it's dark even though I'm naturally pretty dark blonde which would be called brown by most people] I don't wanna downgrade professionals at all. I think there are many gems in the industry, but unfortunately we're all just human beings and humans make mistakes and have bad days. And I can tolerate a mistake being made by myself much better than a mistake made by someone else that affects me.

I will never forget how one time about twenty years ago when i was younger, i wanted to trim my shoulder length hair in order to go, so i went to a very upscale fancy salon in Manhattan nyc, i told him i just wanted a little trim only about an inch........well guess what i heard a snip in the back of my head look down at the floor and saw 6 inches of hair fall to the ground, i put my hands on the back of my head and felt my scalp he had cut almost all of my hair off, i left with a pixie cut and in tears i had to pay him to ruin the next year of my life i do not look good with short hair i have a chubby face and need hair it looked horrible im mean really horrible, i cried for weeks it didn't even seem to grow at all i have never forgotten that day and i have never returned to a salon since i now have bra strap length hair and i won't let anyone touch it but me...i do not know why hairdressers do this i asked him why and he said he thought i would look more modern with short hair this infuriates me!!! It is not their decisions!!!🤬😡😠

i'd say if you know what you're doing then it's less likely to go wrong. I'm a professional hairdresser (and control freak when it comes to my hair), since growing my hair out from a pixie cut last year i have had 4 haircuts and the only time i got what i asked for was when i did it myself. i've been on and off cutting and colouring my hair for years and i prefer it when i do it myself but i let others have a go on my hair when it's harder to do it myself (especially when it was super short and harder to reach the back) so i understand where people are coming from when they say they prefer to do it themselves but i do find those who aren't trained in hairdressing do tend to make (what i would class as) "rookie mistakes" especially when they cut their hair themselves and as a hairdresser i have had to rectify many a "homemade haircut" (and colouring mistakes from those who don't understand colouring is a science and follow the colour wheel) when working in salon so i can see it from both sides. Homemade doesn't mean it will be bad but it will often turn out that way unless you are professionally trained and take a lot of care when doing so

Feel like you have very strict haters in your comments. I never read many comments, I rather comment myself. But the way you talk once it's done...made me think. Those haters don't realize how hard it is to cut your own hair. I have long hair and I wasn't able to see where I would have cut. The mirrors where all wrong and I wouldn't have had to stand anyways...I tried, but I couldn't make it work. So I have high respect for you and your art. And you look super cute! Hair cutting really simply depends on who is cutting and the results wanted. I've had both amazing and terrible salon experiences. For a shorter style cut, I went to a professional whose talent was unsurpassed; he was so precise. Now my hair is much longer, and I don't like any layers. My sister does a great job and gives me exactly what I ask. I've also cut my hair myself, but for reaching the back I prefer my sister.

I haven’t gotten my hair cut by an actual stylist at their place of work in over 10 years I believe. The last one I got - imho did not turn out remotely like the photo I showed and I was highly disappointed. But I fixed it and made it work by cutting more off to make it something else and to make it work for me. Ever since then, my hair is for me to do and if I mess up - oh well. It grows back. I messed up my hair yet again (seems I have a habit of doing this at least once every one to two years - I never learn my lesson). Now I have a very short pixie cut and I’m also growing out my undercut for the next 4-6 months. I’m gonna cut it off again when I feel it’s gotten long enough to do so. And I feel at home haircuts obviously depends on how much experience you have playing with your own hair. And if YOU like it, or even love it, then what others say is irrelevant. NOBODY will make me dislike something I love about my hair. I am the one wearing it, not them. And if I do mess up oh so badly - not the end of the world. My hair grows pretty fast. For the next few months I will not be putting heat on my hair and just let it all grow out.. something I haven’t done in years since having my undercut. Last year I grew it out for 4 months before finally cutting it as I got tired of having a full head of hair (“full head of hair” meaning four-five months of growth of an undercut but it was annoying as hell). Only grew it out so I could realign everything better. Best decision and I’ll be doing that again, maybe a different shape than before but still pretty much at some point after 4-5 months I will have my undercut back.. and the top will have grown out more by then too. I’m excited this time but even more excited to bring back my undercut 😂 anyways, I LOVE how this turned out. I love seeing you just have fun with your hair and way too many forget that you love it too - despite how it may turn out. You’re not here to give perfection anyways. And those people on Instagram and tiktok apparently don’t watch your KZitem videos as you eventually explained what your plans were with the extensions - something that was very obvious imho. Love this color as well! Keep being you 🫶🏼 forgot to mention that I used my razor to cut my hair (actual hair cutting razor, not like the one you used tho) and it turned out so much better instead of using scissors! I forgot how much I love using them since it’s been a long ass time since I last did.. probably at least 8-10 years ago by now!

Professional doesn’t always mean best job. Experience, knowledge and understanding the dynamics I think gives best results. So a person who is self taught can 100% deliver a better result than a “professional”. Sometimes I think college teach the health and safety and the basic principles, practice and passion is what leads to a good hairdresser. I hope that comes across how I mean
