I don't know why but I found the very dark pieces interesting. I think they would make interesting cabs that would be best wire wrapped!

Thanks, Patricia! I find them all interesting as well. Even the duds. I have made a few fossil wood cabochons. If you don't have a fancy color to sell the stone, your cab making skills better be on point if your trying to get another to separate from their hard earned monies. I'll be making a dark wood cab on video here soon, should be fun. :D

@@camplapidary I can't wait to see that! I just learned to add some really tiny seed beads to the wire while weaving it and would love to do one of the darker cabs with that technique. Probably will drive me crazy picking which colors to use lol.

Is the black material jet?it is softer and can be found in Utah.

A friend once gave me a piece of what they said was Jet. That piece is all I've experienced of the material. It's kind of like black plastic mixed with graphite in texture and consistency, and has a weird water repelling ability, at least the piece I have does.. So, I don't think it's Jet.

I'm really digging the credits screen! I'm in some really great company! Lol! Those cuts were interesting. I like the one seam that was half agatized and half opalized. That was pretty cool. And the opalized parts were not just a solid white or tan they have pattern to them! The ones that are black inside almost look like they are becoming coal! Which is strange and makes them older than we fort thought! That first one you said might be palm root is weird looking and is white and black! How cool but weird! And the black parts don't usually don't take a polish anyways. And the second one , the little piece, that looked just like the other one but I've never seen palm look anything like that inside! Very strange! But still cool. The rest are kind of meh, but like I said, the black wood doesn't take a polish. So what do you do with it? They were kind of cool looking as specimens. But other than that they make nice yard rock! Lol Thanks Marc, for showing us the insides; it's so cool that you can do that on location now!

Nephi Palm is kinda rare, I've only found a few over the years. I'm not sure what that other than palm piece is. Palm on a different axis? Decomposed palm and then fossilized? Dunno.

Black wood - Most of the dark wood I find will take a polish. Select a nice piece and one can make a fine gem. Problem is selling. One can and will sell 25 blue/green/pink colored stones before selling one dark or brown rock. I'll cab up a piece on video just for fun here soon, you can judge for yourself. This old video here, kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5elmJt_poVpe4o I make a Tempskya Fossil Fern Cab. I didn't find that material though.
