I appreciated this information so much. I am very new to journaling and junk journals. I took apart a book prior to any knowledge of doing so. Of course I didn't do it exactly right but not too bad. I've learned about Edith Holden from another channel and I'm so impressed about who she was and how I should respect what she has left behind. I am 66 years old and still learning new things everyday as I watch you and other creators on You Tube. Thank you very much for guiding me in deconstructing a book neatly and respectfully.

@JunkJournalideas
4 жыл бұрын
Hello Cass, a seam ripper would work fine with removing the stitches in the middle of the signatures, but i wouldn't use it to cut the stitches between the glued signatures (but that's me). because its a different use, the stitches are so tight and glued together you would need to try and get the seam ripper point in and under the stitches and then push it to cut the stitch? the cutting area of a seam ripper is at least 1/4" away from the tip, so you would need to push it in a fair way, i dunno give it a try it might work? thanks for tuning in :-) hugs Donna

I have found some older copies of her book dating back to the 70’s but based on what I have read related to copyright in the US the book has to be 1923 or before to use it in Junk journals or altered books we would sell. Is that true for Edith’s books because she wrote it so long ago that it would qualify for the 1923 copyright? I so want to purchase one or more of these books to use in the journals I create, and it’s important to me to respect copyright. I love the care you took in taking the book apart. 💕
@JunkJournalideas
3 жыл бұрын
hello Nellie, copyright in each country varies I don't give copyright advice other than the basics because its such a rabbit hole and i'm no expert. Copyright can be extended by the family so you have to check everything when it comes to copying, that's the magic word copying. I'm with you about respect of all authors and artist where copyright is concerned, I always advise that you never copy, just use the original pages in your journal and all will be fine. Thanks for your compliment about taking the book apart, I really feel it was so precious and wanted to keep the pages double sided. enjoy you EH book when you get it, you will love the paper and the illustrations, ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna

I too am lucky enough to have an Edith Holden watercolor journal. I was so happy to find your video as I am just starting to use it to make a personal journal for myself. I’ve had the book for years and loved just perusing the beautiful pages. I didn’t know Ms Holden was so popular until I started seeing people use digitized papers and recognized the pages. I’m looking forward to watching your project develop. 😊

Hi Sarah, a watercolor journal wow this sounds interesting, there are so many varieties of her beautiful works. I didn't use the pages in this series I used them elsewhere bc of the size being bigger, I used a smaller book cover to do my demo once I took the original book apart. But in saying that the process is the same, enjoy your creation ♥︎♡☆🦋 hugs Donna

Donna, how great to see this video. I just bought the soft cover of Edith Holden’s. I will now get the hardcover. I couldn’t make myself do it. I was afraid of ruining the pages. Thankfully. You’ve shown everyone how. What a super instructor you are. So tickled to find your KZitem! Looking forward to watch more 👍🏼 Willa in Kansas 🌪

Using a Quick Unpick - a tool used by sewing machinists would be easier for me than a knife or scissors when cutting the stitching on the spine and each page, I think. I haven't had the courage to cut my Edith Holden books up yet ( I have the original and a one that is actually for use as diary decorated with Edith's illustrations) even though I bought them from Charity Shops for just that purpose. Think that I will have to buy another to cut from and keep one to look at. Hee Hee. I did appreciate you taking the time to show us how to deconstruct a book carefully and without 'damaging' it. You did it in the most reverential, respectful way I have seen so far. Thank you. Looking forward to the rest in the series.

I’m new to junk journaling. I loved your video of taking apart the Cherished Edith Holden Book. I have been looking in all the antique stores around here searching for a copy to call my own. You taught me so much about how to take the book apart, but I must say my heart was racing in my chest watching you. Thank you for sharing your video. Have a blessed day. ~Sheree Watkins

A very concise and clear video on how to take apart a cherished book. I have been making journals for a while now but learnt a lot from your demo. I use a seam ripper to take the stitches from the inside of the signature and find that easier than scissors. Thanks for taking the time to explain everything so well. You just might have given me the confidence to dismantle my Edith Holden book to use as well👍

Thank you for such an informative and easy to follow tutorial. I look forward to the rest of the series. Once upon a time I was horrified at the idea of cutting up books but have now come to terms with recycling and reusing. I am still hunting for copies of Edith Holden books at my local thrift shops. They are so popular they are getting expensive to buy and harder to find.

Gday Helen thx!♡ for your compliment :-) i will continue the series when my delivery arrives. I know what you mean about the first cut too. Here in Australia it would be rare to find a copy in a thrift shop but that doesn't stop me from looking lol, i visualize there being one sitting there one day. I hope that happens for you soonest. I picked this copy up off facebook market place...thanks for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna

Thank you so much for showing us this technique. I love her writing and I am getting into them even more. Gday Adele, i get what you mean, i think it was always easy for me bc i'm a traditional leather crafter and had to cut into very large leather hides worth heaps of $$, so cutting into books to repair or take apart was an easier process for me (luckily) Cutting up a wedding dress would be awesome!! i must keep my eye out for one now...thx!♡ for tuning in and happy crafting 🦋 cheers Donna
