I noticed a CV boot had split on my vehicle. I have previously repaired the CV boot on the other side by removing the driveshaft. That was a bit of work as it was the first time doing a CV boot. I learnt a lot and could do the repair much quicker now.
But this time I liked the idea of trying a split CV boot that you do not need to remove the driveshaft. The boot has a split along its length and you open the split and put the boot over you driveshaft without any disassembly. Then glue the split together.
Much of the online chat do not like the split boot system due to not working, short longevity and not the "proper" way. This all seemed to be anecdotal and opinions. I did not find any factual data. Plus this way seemed easier!
I only remove the wheel for better access and made the repair. It felt a bit awkward at times again due to the first time using this system. I think I could do the repair in a fraction of the time if doing it again.
The system seemed to work well. Biggest issue is keeping the CV boot mating surfaces clean so they glue properly. The boot did come away from the hub after 3 days as the retaining band did not hold properly. I repacked the CV with grease and retained the boot with a worm drive clip(Jubilee clip). The boot has been fine since.
Whether the CV boot repair lasts is to be seen. So far the repair has worked well. It's been about a month between doing the repair and uploading. The car is used daily for about 10 miles per day for work and longer trip here and there. Any questions, please ask.
