Dude. Just change your CVT fluid every 65,000 miles and invest on a transmission cooler/heat exchanger. Reason why you hear the whining noise is because the transmission gets too hot to the point where the CVT fluid tends to lose its viscosity, in which you have little to no lubrication to the steel belts inside the CVT transmission. That’s why the car goes to fail safe mode. Because if the computer reads that the temperature of the fluid is too hot, it will go on fail safe mode. Trust me. It had happened to me on my Altima.

The CVTs on Nissan Altimas have a small cooler but it is inadequate since the transmission runs hot to begin with so I could see how this could be a benefit and it sounds like you add it on in a different place than the cooler it comes with or maybe in conjunction with that original cooler on there. Hmm. May look into this. Thanks.

I don't have a nissan. I own a Toyota Vitz 2014 with CVT transmission and when I drive it aggressively and on steep hills it usually whines. Once it cools down it is fine. Inspected the coolant and found the Toyota long life coolant mixed with a green coolant, most likely Prestone. I drained and flushed my system with distilled water and radiator flush, cleaned some rubbery type buildup in the radiator cap and filled with genuine Toyota long life coolant. The difference is night and day. I have driven it aggressively but haven't thoroughly tested it under all conditions before fluid change but I already have experienced a significant improvement. The contaminated fluid shows separation of the green and pink coolants with the green floating on top and has consistency of a thin syrup. Hope this experience can help someone with a similar problem.

Hi there, been through this issue. So here is what I've found so far, I have 2009 Altima US Specs, the same thing happened to me car went to safe mode and won't speed up, i simply changed the CVT fluid, run well for a month or so and then again the same thing, i changed the fluid again but this time it was hot here in UAE and i had to drive to another city where maximum speed limit is 160 kmh and guess what same thing happened car went to safe mode couldn't accelerate more than 120 kmh. so i searched the web for issues on Nissan CVT. I Found a comment from some nissan tech guy explaining that CVT fluid is temperature sensitive and expands on high temperature he further added that he had usually found cars with a high level of CVT Fluid which turns out to be the issue for fail safe mode. To check that i drove my car at speed of 160 kmh (Since there is no problem at lower speed) as soon as car went to safe mode i stopped and checked the CVT Fluid guage which was showing CVT fluid 3 times above the maximum fluid limit. Anyway to cut it short here is what you have to do, 1st of all Nissan gave a specific range of temperature at which you have to check CVT fluid level, usually we fill the fluid to maximum level when the CVT and CVT fluid itself is cold which causes all the problem. So if you are facing such problem simple reduce the level of CVT Fluid to minimum level indicated on level guage. run the car at high speed for like 3,4 hours and then check the fluid level again if hot CVT is exceeding maximum level you have further reduce the fluid. I did the same (took me some time though) but now i am not facing any winning sound or fail safe mode or anything car runs smooth at any speed. Altima is speed locked just below 120 mph / 190 kph and i ve to that max for about 30 mints without any issues. Hope this will solve everyone's problem with CVT and fail safe.

With cvt transmissions you have to have the transmission serviced every 40k to 50k the manufacturers are recommending every 25k but you dont have to be that excessive. All transmissions are supposed to be serviced but most people don't cvts are just higher maintenance than others
@BadGyrlBren

That's exactly right there's a guy online that has a blog about his 2012 Nissan Sentra he maintained he maintains the CBT every 15,000 miles he changes the fluid and he's had no problems no whining nothing I did read also about the the transmission cooler I'm sure that would help if the transmission is heating up especially in summer mine hasn't been making any extraneous noises but I did have to have my transmission rebuilt but it made no noises it just wouldn't the power was low on it and there were some lights on and that type of thing and I took it over to Aamco transmissions and they rebuilt the transmission This car has several quirky things about it and you have to make sure that you know what they are and you keep an eye on them that CBT is one of them jabco makes back then made crappy CVT transmissions and they've had problems in later years as well so that's just something to know about and maintain it 40 to 60 thousand miles is way too long to be servicing these transmissions when that fluid gets dark it's time to change it it can be checked at intervals you just have to have your mechanic do it maintenance is key for these automobiles if you want them to last out 100,000 plus miles

Once those transmission start making a whining noise or anything out of the ordinary, you're looking at a rebuild. The Fail Safe is mainly so it doesn't stall or go out on you while you're driving but otherwise you need a rebuild / new transmission. I do have to say if you can get 299k on a CVT transmission, that's pretty darn good. I see most go out before 150k, which is why I won't buy a car with one myself (at least not right now--maybe in the future when they can prove they can go 200k without issues and regular mainteiance).

"CVT Whining Noise and Fail Safe Mode Fixed!" "BUT...You know. BUT...You Know. BUT...You Know...Etc, etc and ETC". Not to mention: constantly moving the camera over and over and over; that makes one" sea sick"...Sad, sad and SAD. So get this: My Nissan CVT had a "Whining Noise"; that could be felt. But NO "Fail Safe Mode". So... I took it to a transmission shop last Friday; and they changed the oil. It cost me 400 dollars; and I bought the new Nissan oil myself; before I went to the shop. I asked them to clean the "Mass Air Flow" sensor; and clean the "Throttle Body" sensor; and I bought the cleaner cans. They did all of this... It took them 4 hours to do the job. Drove it out; and the sound is still there; and I can still feel it. Plus, I KNOW they replaced the Nissan oil with a brand new set of almost 6 cartons. No doubt. But my car IS much smoother and the mileage is rising. Hooray! Now then "BUT and You know", oops...I meant "Buster Brown"; tell me this...WHY do I still have a whining noise? Huh kind Sir? Oops don't bother to answer; for I won't waste my time again; watching you constantly move your camera; around and around the whole time; let alone hearing you say over and over, "BUT...You know. BUT...You Know. BUT...You Know...Etc, etc and ETC". Sorry jes' "caint" stand it Bubba... CYA

400 to change the oil? You got ripped off. The oil should have cost 50.00 at most...I have diy videos on how to change it yourself with a 10.00 pump from ebay and 10.00 tubing from.the Home Depot.
@peterl6095

You still have that winding noise either because the cvt belt is worn or that shop you went to never changed the oil.
@MrPatdeeee

@@peterl6095 The facts: 1. They DID change the oil; because I asked a dear friend; to make sure. And he did it. 2. To remove the oil and replace it; plus clean the "MAF" sensor and the "Throttle Body" sensor; and take the car for a test and get it hot; so they can determine if the oil is correct; took 4 hours. 3. If you divide 4 hours into 400 dollars; comes out to only 100 dollars per hour; and in today's cost; I was totally pleased with what they did. 4. They changed the CVT filter and gave me the old one; and they discounted the price of it to dirt cheap. 5. I have NO problems with what they did; nor their costs. But I am madder than hell with NISSAN. And ALL manufacturers that make those worthless piece of crap. Incidentally; My original comment's "point" was: Your using the words "BUT and You Know"; over and over and over again. That drove me crazy. Not to mention your constant moving of your camera the entire video. Sad indeed. Finally: the problem with the CVT's; is not "this or that". The problem is: That damned CVT is pure "garbage in and garbage out." They should have NEVER used that worthless transmission on any car. Believe it or not. And the proof is: The myriad of "Class Act Suites"; today; ALL over the world proves it beyond doubt; that transmission is a JOKE!. End of Story and I rest me case.

@@MrPatdeeee That shouldn't have cost 400.00. Prob should have checked your fluid to see what color it was. If it was black and burnt, should have done the diy yourself. It wouldn't have been worth dumping 400.00 into it.

@@MrPatdeeee I have links in my pinned comment. Just buy a 10.00 pump, 5 quarts of cvt fluid and some tubing from Home depot. Only takes about 30 min. Costs less than 70.00.

its funny how North American dealers tells buyers of any vehicle, regardless of transmission types, that their ATF is lifetime.... Meanwhile, in the EU, they suggest a 30-50,000Mi (50-80,000KM) drain and fill service.... Am in Canada, and have always, at least do 1 drain and fill every 50,000KM (from new) or at least 2x for used vehicles.... on domestic(Used Purchases): seeing how it performs after the 1st drain and fill of my ownership; keeping the old fluid for a while just in case) On Asian brands(Used Purchase, non CVT, with Aisin branded Auto Trans): initial drain and fill 2-3x(500km apart) then every 50,000km thereafter On Euro vehicles (Used Purchase, non DSG, with Aisin Auto Transmission) : Same as Asian Vehicle procedures. at $24-36/Gal its no big deal for peace of mind. Never had a problem since(Used vehicles are my winter cars... i usually keep for 3-4 yrs, purchase millage range around 170,000KM-270,000KM, Except for Volvos and Toyotas ... as high as 300,000KM possible). Works for me ... (Personal decision/opinion) never had a CVT vehicle (i avoid) or DSG yet... 😁

I read online from a person who does not have any problems with their 2012 Nissan Sentra CVT transmission he changes his fluid out when it changes to a dark color If you use red fluid when it turns black If you have a clear or light gold fluid when it turns black it should be changed It's no longer any good and he's doing his every 15,000 miles 40 to 60,000 mi is way too long to be waiting to change that CVT fluid but hey if it's working for you that's fine and also like the other gentleman was saying you need that aftermarket transmission cooler that helps a lot as well If you're going to keep the vehicle I forgot what year yours was the the guy who's doing this KZitem video but mine is a 2012 and at this point I've had to rebuild my transmission and I'm going to get rid of it I just I want something bigger anyway and it's starting to have other little quirky issues and I don't want to be taking it to the dealer the car isn't worth that much anymore and I want something bigger so I just want to get it fixed good enough to sell it But hey good luck If you love the vehicle and want to keep it.

That god them 2 Asians showed how nasty that filter gets .. Transmission filter MUST be replace - period. Btw....Do you have 300,000 miles on car???
