"They're not puzzle games, they're worlds." That's the difference between a puzzle game and an adventure game. In a puzzle game, you find a locked door and you go looking for a key. In an adventure game, you find a locked door and remember that axe you saw in the woods. And I think Riven is probably the most adventure game I've ever played, and I've been playing them from before the invention of video displays for computers.
@DasGanon

I've had this discussion about how it's either a Riddle or a MetaPuzzle or whatever but it's absolutely the difference between Portal and The Outer Wilds. Portal you know "I'm going to use Portals to get to the door". Outer Wilds it's just answering questions and looking at where that goes. The new Riven is absolutely in the latter camp, and your only direction is Atrus going "Hey here's a trap, go save my wife." and it's amazing for it.

That's why i get obsessed with Cyan games, but don't finish things like The Witness or Talos Principle... Cyan games are exploration games with puzzles in them, Talos Principle is a puzzle game with some exploration in it. Puzzles in Cyan games are intricately sewed into the world and are designed to drive exploration. Something like Talos, is about getting to new puzzle rooms.
@darrennew8211
Ай бұрын
@@agahnim0196 Exactly. Portal kind of spans it just because of the brilliance of the writing. But I love me some environmental story telling that isn't stuffed into your face. Talos Principle is a perfect example of puzzle-no-story. Another contrast is Myst vs 7th Guest, which both came out in the same sort of timeframe and thus tend to confuse people.
@jd5734
Ай бұрын
I don't really see what the difference is in this example. They're both things you can use to open the door.
@darrennew8211
Ай бұрын
@@jd5734 Right. But one, you know that there's a key for the lock because that's the puzzle. The other requires you to consider the entire environment to determine what methods you have for opening the door. Consider Myst: The key is three dates. The lock's combination is a collection of random-seeming symbols. You have to put together the fact that the symbols match constellations you saw written down, and that (here's the important part) there are different constellations in the sky on different dates. Without knowing that about astronomy, you can't open stoneship. Similarly, think about draining the pool in Revelation or getting into the lighthouse in Stoneship. It's not a matter of just finding the key to the lock. You see the lock. You see the key. Now you have to figure out how to use physics to get the key to the lock. Or Channelwood, where you have to realize that a boiler has to be lit, or that water power has to flow into the machinery. (Or course, *some* of the puzzles were indeed just combination locks with the combination written down somewhere.) Contrast with (say) 7th Guest, where progress is gated behind puzzles like the 8 queens puzzle. Or Talos Principle, where there's nothing in the environment you need to understand to solve the puzzles, and no outside knowledge you need to know. In Colossal Cave, you have to know that birds frighten snakes and snakes eat birds, that bears are heavy and rickety bridges can hold your weight even if it can't hold a bear's weight. None of which are presented as such in the game.

I just finished the new Riven and want to say what an amazing work that is. I expected a 1:1 graphics remake, and what we got instead was an entirely new game that felt like I was exploring it again for the first time. The mind-screw of seeing the new inside of the fire marble domes! The far more extensive village with its complex network of walkways, ladders and drawbridges! The extra focus on Riven's strange water, even making it relevant to some puzzles. It was also exciting to look up the journals from 1997 and see page by page the subtle additions and improvements, filling old plot holes and adding more life and background to Catherine's character in particular.

It made sense lore wise and also really hammers home the insanity that is Gehn. I really appreciated how many of Gehn's rooms were relocated to more hidden with less readily accessible pathways to them. The fact you could actually view parts of the worlds that were inaccessible before, was a desire I had for 20 plus years! All of the changes were very logical and expanding the lore, while also preventing my memory from completely breaking the game and making it a lengthier experience. While you can never recreate the first time experience, I certainly believe this was as close as you could get to that and that is a beautiful thing.

I felt right at home. Thanks so much for the expansion with Age 233 especially. Gehn’s character fascinates me to no end- that “shark” look (“I have changed”) was absolutely striking and iconic! The edgy vibe of Riven is my favorite, favorite game in the series (and I love them all). It definitely feels like you’ve been building up to this and then to a new D’ni story to tell- I hope it has that same kind of edge and in its own way. This was super thrilling and a very very nice fulfillment of how much we all wanted to climb through our screens and get into these worlds. We were among the fans who re-visited the original Riven multiple times. We'll do the same with this new Riven. I want to add my voice to those wanting more games like Riven. In my opinion Riven was a masterpiece. Cyan at your best!. Obduction and Firmament were gorgeous! But with a bit less tightness. Riven is what it is. If no outside help had come, it would have been structurally the exact same. Does a tree crashing to the ground make noise if there is no one to hear it? In this case, absolutely! There were no puzzles. It was a case of discovery: what is happening here and how and why are there are impediments requiring investigation to get beyond. That is environmental storytelling!!! Please, do it again! Oh, and thank you very much for a refreshing Riven re-make! ❤❤❤ P.S. Multiplayer games are really getting to be a thing. Man, it's a wake-up call hearing them say pretty bluntly "the reviews are maybe the most positive we have ever received at Cyan, and we're thankful, but to be frank not enough people are buying this and we need your help getting the word out." I definitely agree with y'all that it's always a little disheartening to look through threads and see so many people going "wait, there's a Riven remake out??" I think focusing on ports, as you mentioned you are working on next, feels like it will help this somewhat - as a big fan, I've been doing my best to spread the word about Riven, but have noticed most folks I know don't own a PC, Mac or Quest headset that would be able to play it. Meanwhile, almost everyone I know owns a Nintendo Switch and would probably jump at the opportunity to pick up a Switch-optimized version of the game if they could. Anyway - let me just say I thought the new Riven was a masterpiece. I appreciated getting to visit this world again through brand new eyes; every time I was able to experience something brand new, it made me that much more excited about what new D'niverse project you guys folks might have in store, because clearly you are on an absolute roll here. Rand and co, thank you so so SO much for all the hard work and love you put into all your games, and particularly Riven. Riven was and is my favorite game of all time, and has been a constant influence in so many different areas of my life. As an indie dev myself (working in a different but related genre), Riven is still probably my biggest source of inspiration. I've been telling all my friends about the remake and trying to get as many people to experience it as possible, because it's special in a way that very few games are. There really is something magical about it - that magic was there in 1997, and it hasn't gone away. I can't begin to describe how giddy I was to boot up the remake and then just...be back. Finally. After so many years. So thank YOU. Rand, I wish you the very best on your retirement, and hope you get up to some good shenanigans. Thank you guys - the work you do is amazing - keep it going! I have been playing Myst on a friend's computer as a kid in the late 90s and there was even a tv show where they streamed playing it. It is great that I can now come back to these times and replay those games with the understanding of the story and puzzles I have now. I don't buy a lot of games but your games are ones that I would buy again and again and wouldn't even think about it.

The new Riven was *incredible* both as a remake and as an addition to the previous Riven content. The additions to both the story and the environment are wonderful and very welcome, and I can't wait to replay it in VR! Thank you so much for going above and beyond and being willing to modify what is by many regarded as your best game for this remake. The changes you've made have only made the game better, but making those changes to such a popular game must've taken some courage! Also, enjoy your retirement Rand!

I really love i got to revisit Riven to be in the world i find mysterious and wonderful at the same time. I love i got to revisit old and experience new hidden treasures to get myself home in a great story. I love the D'ni universe and the hidden history it offers. I cant wait till Myst 3: Exile gets an upgrade.

I have an interesting relationship with Myst. In my youth, I attempted the original version several times and failed (completely on me), but despite that, a real love and passion for "Myst-likes" formed. Other games in the genre like "The WItness" cultivated an itch that needed scratching - I always wanted more! There's a cool game called "Quern: Undying Thoughts" that also had a similar effect, as well as "The Room" series. When Obduction came out, I jumped with excitement, and then when the Myst remake came out, I saw this opportunity to complete a life-long quest of completing a game that had been on my mind for decades. It was so incredibly fulfilling to reach the end. Likewise, Riven was an absolute blast! I appreciate that it's difficult enough that it's on the cusp of frustrating, but then the eureka moment is so much sweeter when it all clicks. I know that a lot of this presentation discusses changes from the original, but doing a visual comparison, I'm shocked at how faithfully a lot of details were reproduced; it's clear that a lot of care went into matching geometry and materials, and I love that. As a QA tester myself, I totally understand the nerves that come with coming in to the finish line hot. Pretty much every game I've worked on, and I now assume that it's the case for the entire industry, has some critical issues that are nail-biting and solved at the 11th hour. Alanah Pearce once talked about how every game is a little miracle that is held together by duct tape, and I often think about that. Also, can I just say how awesome Hannah and Eric are?! Not that there was ever any doubt, but they inspire a lot of confidence about the future of Cyan, and as a gamer I'm incredibly excited about what's to come.

I haven't beat the new Riven yet but I absolutely love it. It takes me back to something familiar like seeing an old friend and catching up. It's just amazing. Rand deserves to retire. He's a legend to me. But I still hope to see his influence. You all did great. I can't wait to see where the dniverse goes. Your worlds mean the world to me. So thank you so very much!

I played the original MYST and RIVEN when they released. My brother found MYST and we got it as our very first CDROM game! We played MYST together. Then RIVEN came out and we played that together as well. It was just a JOY to play this latest version of RIVEN ... in PC VR (Steam w/ Valve Index). it is so gorgeous, and I got lost just walking around the world. So much so, that I forgot to take NECESSARY screenshots, I got many that were glamour shots I found or trying to look through walls (he he he, it is a pleasure of mine! But I took time to go back and lift the heavy headset off to write down notes pen and paper old school style, in a kind of spread sheet style and my messy handwriting. I LOVE the changes! There is plenty of things I remember. And I have the original game (in it's own boxed version with autographs as well as the anniversary box set!) so no worries! The changes made so much sense AND it was so wonderful to play the game as if a brand new player! It is GORGEOUS and feels so real. Thank you very much for all your hard work! As stated above I was a fan starting with the first MYST game that my younger brother played with me. Thank you, and best of luck in the present and the future!! I am so hoping you get lots of sales!!!! You truly deserve it!

Rand you probably won't see this. But you supercharged my imagination as a child. Leading me to read hundreds of books and craft my own worlds in tabletop rpgs. I'm replaying your games with my children now and they have the same sense of wonder I felt so many years ago. Please never stop, Cyan has always brought something new and spectacular to storytelling. I love you and what you have done.

absolutely great being there in VR. funny trivia: back when this was launching, I was actually playing text-adventures I missed back in the 80s as I was too busy with arcade and console games. My first Cyan game was actually Obduction, on psvr. Since then also finished Myst in VR as well. Exploring fantastic worlds like this is what this new medium was made for... often too wasted in dumb minigames...

So much love to Cyan. Riven 2024 is life-changing and so inspiring; it still feels like a miracle occurred. It's so meditative to stand in that clear-cut area and just hear the sounds, imagine the sun beating down on you and smell the wood shavings. I grew up playing Riven from the ripe age of 8, and it hasn't left me since. Seeing it again in this new medium with so much more detail feels like the world is complete and gives me so much faith in humanity. I hope this game really takes off in the way Cyan wants it to and will do everything I can to spread the word of how great it is.

Thank you for sharing this "State of The Union". Very interesting. I haven't played through Riven yet, but have enjoyed it very much so far. Being able to look and go in any direction alone adds a whole new dimension to the game! I'd just like to say CYAN has always made the only computer games I have any interest in. Exploring incredible worlds at my own pace without fear of being killed or having to kill is so relaxingly satisfying. For me, Rand and Robyn brought the spirit of an old, text driven game, I really enjoyed back in the day, called Zork. MYST provided.exploration similar to Zork, but with amazing visuals to go along with the exploration. Since then, CYAN has steadily improved upon its unique mastery of the art. Regarding Rand's retirement, congratulations! (How nice it is to have the time to work on pet projects without deadlines!) Rand's retirement is well deserved and it appears CYAN is in very capable hands for the future. My prayer is that the pioneering spirit at CYAN continues with much future success.

Unlike when I first played Riven in the 90s, my present machine isn't able to run it. So I've been watching a lot of playthroughs from different players, and one thing they all have in common: they move too fast! I long for someone to stand at the top of the steps on Map Island and just look. And listen. To drink in the almost alien otherness of the world. When playing the OG I had been gobsmacked at the spellbinding beauty of the environments, and how with a relatively small palette of pre-rendered scenes I was able to form a mental picture of the whole thing. Now with the game in Unreal, the beauty of the place is all there in stunning fidelity, and EVERY PLAYER prefers to rush from place to place, not taking time to experience the synergy of visuals, Robin's music, and the beautiful sound design. Don't listen to me, I'm a grumpy old man.

Great to hear about ports, while i primarily play on PC and Quest these days (Riven in PCVR is a dream come true) my first experience of Riven was on the Sega Saturn way back when it came out. Seeing the Cyan logo spin and hearing that intro music on my CRT television in the dark transported me and I am sure that many more people will go on this journey with you in the years to come. Thank you Cyan and thank you Rand and Robyn for creating this amazing world that is truly timeless. Your success as a studio is earned a thousand times over, enjoy your retirement Rand it looks like Cyan is in good hands.

Minasunda here :) In the original Riven there were two places where I thought, what a pity that I can't go through that door. How surprised I was and how happy to have my wish granted in the remake. How great! Cyan, I thank you for this really successful and wonderful remake. It's brilliant. I wish Rand a wonderful well-deserved retirement. I'm sure Cyan will continue to be in good hands. I love you all and maybe I meet some of you in the cavern now and than :)

Riven 2024 is truely the best news from Cyan since Riven 1997. Exile and Revelations remakes would be the next best thing. Thank you, Cyan! You knocked this out of the park! Of course, the city of Aegera and K'veer would be amazing to see in UE5 engine.
