@@AzathothsAlarmClockThe Berzerker were definitely pioneers in the realm of fusing grindcore with pummelling electronics, not to mention the likes of Eustachian and Phantomsmasher. I'd also argue that at least some debt is owed to Agoraphobic Nosebleed, O.L.D. (particularly their later records), and that whole mini-wave of industrial thrash bands like Malhavoc and Nailbomb. The bizarre Japanese psych-grind act Clotted Symmetric Sexual Organ also feel very proto-cybergrind aesthetically speaking, and certainly the Czech deathgrind scene (Contrastic, !T.O.O.H!, etc.) had some extremely weird shit going on in a similar vein.

9:33 everything about what he's saying here is entirely false. Here's a list of bands that welcomed rap/hip hop with open arms: Aerosmith, Anthrax, Blondie, the Beastie Boys were a hardcore punk band that converted to Hip Hop after making a few rap songs as a joke. While it's fair to say that rock and metal didn't incorporate hip hop and rap into their discographies, rock and metal as a whole didn't reject the nascent genre. The broader accusation however that rock and metal rejected black culture altogether is, frankly, offensive. Both Rock and Metal are genres that were spawned out of black culture and the musicians that create and represent those genres to this day still revere those roots. It was record labels and the music industry responding to American audiences ingrained racism that ultimately chased black people away from those genres in particular, to say that these genres saw any aspect of black culture as a threat is disingenuous at best. Finally it is worth noting that the incorporation of rap into nu-metal was, ultimately, similar to white rock artists during that genres infancy pushing out black performers. While some nu-metal bands gladly welcomed existing rap artists into their bands, the rappers that were actively working within the nu-metal genre were unfailingly white. Frankly it's a good thing for rap as a genre that nu-metal never really became popular as it could have been an earlier vector for white artists to push out black audiences from the genre same way it happened for rock & roll. Thankfully for the present reality and future of rap that nu-metal sucked and the bands that had rappers in them particularly sucked.

This is a really good video that treats the subject matter with a lot of care and respect, so I hope that the criticism I want to advance is received as intended; constructively. I think the history of grindcore articulated here is erroneous. Overlooking the fundamental problem of describing what is a punk subgenre as 'metal', even though this is a sticking point with the majority of N. American coverage, there are further issues. Grindcore is no doubt influenced by death metal (arguably even moreso by Slayer), but it emerged primarily from the European DIY anarcho scene, and inherited both it's politics and habitus. The presence of this is quite obvious in the classic-era records: Napalm Death's anticapitalism, ENT and Carcass' veganism, Bolt Thrower's anti-imperalist anti-war ideology. All of them avowedly covering antiracist and feminist themes. Bands like AC are really the exception in how bigoted the content could be. But this extremity has also made them notorious so it's understandable why they are always mentioned. But the insulting and shocking aspect are not very relevant to grindcore as a culture, and haven't been for decades. It is my view that the strong inclusion of diverse identities within the cybergrind scene as detailed here is contingent upon the social and political attitudes so prominent in grindcore thus far. To propose this influence was absent is similar to other ignored history, for example the overlooking of Black music as the foundation of rock... which is an argument accidentally reconstructed here also. Anyone who has read this far, I recommend checking out the cybergrind act VICTIM UNIT, and the cyber/nu synthesis MEMORRHAGE.

Nu Metal gets dragged like MMA does because of the perception of its fans (I'm admittedly not a fan of MMA, but as a Nu Metal fan, I hear the parallels in the criticism). 4:43 By this metric, alot of glam and hair metal is also outlying. Some of the biggest hits of that era can have a personal focus, even if it still does lean towards looking through that lens of broad concepts. I'd argue, apart from soloing, nu-metal is more in-line with extreme metal than glam, hair, even NBWOHM had/have woh the rest of the genre, before and since it's inception (except power metal maybe). Not denying the massive influence on the evolution of metal, but I simply don't see why Sam Dunn is singling out Nu-Metal from the rest of the scene.

Rap metal was what i was looking for - crazy town, limp bizkit - ratm... It was fun being an LB fan bc they were so universally shit on... the album "results may vary" has a song about how Fred is essentially wondering if the magic is gone and its a done deal. Great album Rap metal went on, theres a bunch of really good, new bands. Nu metal? I dunno i dont listen to that.... And at age 40...the ONLY band im kind of embarrassed i listened...is Korn. Hell I remember buying Linkin Park Hybrid theory on launch day. I was like 10 years old had saved up money for a few weeks to buy it in october of 2000. Ive been thinking about remastering the album and releasing it bc now i make deathstep (its dubstep but way scarier lol) so i would probably just throw an ott on the master of each track lmao. The band was called “The Plastic Unicorns” if anyone cares “goregasm etc.” and “wanna touch it?” Were definitely winners 😆 This is hype though Maybe if you are familliar with it minatory/deathstep/tearout could be another video, as those are the like grindcore/ heavy/ noisemetal influenced dubstep genres that are wild and the most modern ideration where a lot of metal influence ended up when 2010 had dubstep enter the zeitgeist and began the mix of metal etc. bc im even about to drop a WCWBT deathstep remix with my new alias in the next year haha. These are old bc im just pulling from old classics now but peep these people/songs if bored: Moth - Meet your maker Haxim - Phobia Feat for crows - Limbs (tearout?) Osiriz - The Prince (deathstep) Influx - circle of wrath v: Detest (also deathstep) Influx ~ full of hell (minatory) Sennago - Primal Feal Poison - SCAR or Vermin Kroww - War Machine Omega weapon - Blood Karnal - heretic Scarred - throne LVIII Wait im gonna try and find the names and ill be back hopefully if i dont start jamming out. I think Nu-Metal is much more Metal than traditionalists think it is. Rock music originated from Deep South Bluegrass from early African Americans, but Metal’s roots comes from African and South American Tribal music, Metal is about grooving and moshing to the beat of the music, which is what Tribal music is. What happened was in the 80’s Metal became technical and started to be influenced by Classical Music. But that wanting to groove and mosh to the beat of the sounds can be traced back to African and South American Tribal music. So in the 90’s the Groove Metal and Nu-Metal bands were basically revisiting of that wanting to groove and mosh to the beat of the sounds. So Metal is just modern Tribal music, music to mosh and groove to. So Nu-Metal is far more ingrained in Metal than traditionalists realise.

yet again, I genuinely learned something about culture and society by watching a "this exists" video.

Weirdly I think everything you say about the appeal and subsequent fandom distrust of nu metal has applied to the professional wrestling fandom, the fandom, at least for the last 30 years was seen as a over-masculine aggressive portant of stupid destruction (Trump's links to WWE have created many articles about being a "Pro Wrestling president" but has since become a very online fandom with a definite queer subcommunity, thanks to wrestling's closeness to drag. With all that being said, wrestling does a very dark history of both physical and sexual violence that troubles the community that seeks to find the community in all that. Wrestling and Nu Metal kinda seemed irrvocably linked for a brief period in say 2001 - 2007 or so, but i'm a wrestling person and not a new metal person so I'd appreciate further discourse on this. Just my two thoughts as a terminally online wrestling fan! Thanks Sam, again!
