now that is one reason everyone needs cyber bits, a pistol sized railgun would have one heck of a bitchin recoil. But odds are the people who can afford this gun lore wise are already augmented enough to handle it.
@Unit-3D
9 ай бұрын
Rail guns don't use channeled explosions to push their projectiles, which is what generates recoil in firearms as a portion of the gas pressure pushes the gun itself backwards. All of the energy powering a rail gun's projectile through the air comes from two parallel magnetic fields revolving like paired gears, which essentially function as supercharged versions of the flywheels in certain Nerf guns, gripping the projectile and then pulling it through the gun and out like a stray finger in an industrial machine. Which is to say that a rail gun would have no recoil at all despite its immense power, because the firing method that makes it a rail gun does not cause recoil. You don't need to eject any casings either, on account of the projectiles being solid pieces of ferromagnetic material, so their potential fire rate is also much higher than modern conventional guns.
@SpottedHares
9 ай бұрын
It's not being a rail gun that gives it recoil but having lots of energy that gives it recoil. A rail-gun firing with the power of a .22lr is gonna have the recoil... of a .22lr.
@Unit-3D
9 ай бұрын
@@SpottedHares At what point in the firing of a projectile via magnetic rails would a force be pushing the gun backwards, then? The projectile is being pulled down the barrel by magnetic fields in front of it, not pushed forward by a chemical reaction happening behind it, and you can literally find multiple videos of magnet-powered guns and observe in them the absence of recoil.

Weapons and armor have always been a cat and mouse game, one gets better so the other expands to compensate. Guns are about as good as they are going to get, unless we come up with something new. Speed and density works well today, but that is limited by "gunpowder" and chamber pressures. Come up with a way to make insane chamber pressures, or accelerate the projectile without gunpowder and you can beat body armor easily. To that front 5.7 pistols, with the proper ammunition can beat soft body armor with ease. Up the chamber pressure with a tungsten core and you get tiny holes in hard armor.

Really cool idea! Though, I think this is unlikely to be the only thing going on here. The recoil would be far too much for a pistol. Unless I am missing something about rail-guns, I am pretty sure they would still produce the same amount of recoil. Maybe it would feel different, but the counter force would have the same energy. I have an alternative. Perhaps it is shooting at normal pistol velocity but the bullet has a tungsten penetrator core combined with a dynamically shaped charge like the RPG. Maybe they have some kind of technology that improves shaped charges for bullets.
@timcarpenter6098

This has been insightful. I've always been interested in the actual rounds the arms use in Cyberpunk. That pistol that was shown is also comparable to a pistol in Shadowrun (Cyberpunk with meta races I.E. Orks, Elves, etc. And Magick.), the Ares Predator, up to mark 3. A heavy pistol that fires not just standard rounds, but EX, APDS, Gel, among others. But the power behind the ammunition used makes a difference depending on the target. But even the less than lethal rounds hit with so much force, a called shot to the head, neck, or unprotected areas can easily result in either an unconscious foe, or nearly braindead.

It probably isn’t traveling 3,000 fps. Even though speed matters more than mass when calculating armor penetration, a 200 grain tungsten projectile is almost 4x the weight of 5.56 (the round fired by an M4). Tungsten is such a good penetrator because it holds its shape after contact with ceramic unlike softer steel which spreads out and loses velocity to the point where it can be caught by the Kevlar backing on the armor. The 200 grain round could probably be moving around 1,500 fps and still zip through modern armor.
@ThatGuy182545

I hasten to point out that armour and weapons are in a constant “arms race” to be able to defeat each other. If you look at history, someone invents a new way of armouring people, and it owns the world for awhile, until someone else comes along and figures out a way to defeat it. This has been true for centuries. It may be a bit over the top that people are inventing pistols that can shoot through armour intended for military grade weapons, but it’s not at all surprising. We, after all, live in a world where we have multiple pistols (.500 WM revolvers and .50AE automatics) that throw slugs that stand a pretty good chance of dropping someone in rifle plates, even if they don’t breach the plate.

Going by tabletop Cyberpunk's rules and mechanics, AP rounds are way more versatile than penetrators moving at 3000 feet per second. For example, the Malorian Arms Sub-Flechette gun is an absolute beast. An SMG with the firing rate of a rifle that shreds armor with every hit. An AP round reduces armor's protection by 2 points of stopping power. The Mallorian flechette gun can do double that 😊 Should have been in 2077. In 2045 it ends fights very very fast 😂
