Buying a unit next, i’ve used and modded tongsheng tsdz2 motors for MTB riding and have been good but suffer terrible bearing failures and could have been great but fallen out of love having to repair constantly. Price now for tsdz2 under £240 that swings it without batteries but this Cyc product looks another level in bearing and engineering. I love these types of motors and the torque sense just spot on.

You should specify at 3:14, you should only add a spacer to the drive-side if the chainring is hitting your chainstay. If it clears, your spacers should all be placed on the non drive side to keep a straight chainline.

I think the Photon motor is a game changer. You can put it on any bike. I would put that on my old Trek road bike. Although, having said that, I think DIY ebikes should have decent disc brakes for stopping power. I have the CYC X1 Stealth with over 6,000 KM. I love it. But I just purchased and installed the Gen 3 X1 Stealth with the new torque sensor and crank. It is the same sensor as in the Photon. It is a game changer. It is so smooth. It turns your average cyclist into a Tour de France rider. The quality of the build is excellent. I even built a DIY trailer out of an old trike and I can ride smoothly at 50kph in level 3 pedal assist mode...or just use the throttle. Either way I can't even feel the trailer behind me. I chose the full, motorbike like, throttle. I built two folding eBikes last year also with the X1 stealth for a friend. He chose the thumb throttle. I'm glad I had decided on the full throttle. It is more comfortable for long commutes. I also chose a 52v/21AH battery for my build. Another decision I am glad I made because the cold weather up here in Canada really impacts the life of the battery. I tell my friends to get the biggest battery their budget can afford. Heck, I am now looking at adding a second battery on my rear rack to more than double my AH. I am also talking with a guy about building a 100Ah battery in the base of my trailer as I have the room.

Something to think about. What does Torque and Watt have in common? They are both SI Metric System units and the unit of force in them is a Newton. Weight is a force. It is the product of mass multiplied by gravity. Torque is weight or force multiplied by distance. That's why the unit is Newton Meter. But you called weight kilograms. If kilograms was a unit of weight, torque would have the units kilogram meter. But that's not the case which means kilograms is NOT a unit of weight but rather a unit of mass. Just say mass in lieu of weight when referencing the unit gram/kilogram. The ambiguity between weight and mass was resolved a long, long time ago with the SI Metric System.

I wonder how over rated these motors are. ? I installed the TSDZ2 a couple of days ago, running 52v battery and my old Bosch Gen I 50 Nm is more powerful on steep hills so I think it's safe to say the TSDZ2 stock firmware is less than 50 Nm. + the TSDZ2 gets very hot, the Bosch hardly even luke warm. I'm thinking about installing the open source firmware. The TSDZ2 appears more powerful than the Bosch on level ground and moderate hills because it's not speed restricted but on the really steep stuff the Bosch wins. I'd love to try an 85 Nm Bosch but the cost....... This Photon looks small enough, I wonder how much power it really has. The Bosch Gen I 50 Nm is the benchmark for me.

With such a small chainring, you can’t. That’s my biggest beef with many of these kits; they’re all made for slow mountain bikes, and for not pedaling. Yeah, I know the legal limit for assist is 28 mph, but that’s just not safe, or else it relegates us to college campuses, and out of the real world, which I think is their intent.
