I agree that nice riding routes in Japan means getting into the mountains. And mountains are 80% of Japan. In this video, however, the route we took is actually relatively flat, which was lucky as we had a +36 degree heatwave going on. Generally in my vids I try to show some semblance of reality, so don't be fooled into thinking every route is 9% up!

My advice is download Google Earth to your computer and get clicking on all the photos people have uploaded. Also go to street view sometimes. The goal is to plan your route carefully. We choose empty mountain roads or minor country roads as much as possible. And we try to have a bit of variety in the places we visit: temples, shrines, beaches, gardens etc. Also, we use google earth to find great places to camp. I think we will do a winter tour over this Christmas and New Year. So I am at the moment plotting the route and places to visit. We will mostly stay on the west side this time. And I am glad you enjoyed the video!

Thank you Keith for this beautiful cycle camping video and your other wonderful videos my partner and I have recently discovered. Great cinematography, narration and music. To your knowledge, is it possible to visit all or most of the 88 temples on the Shikoku pilgrimage by bike (or bike + some hiking)? I found a Japanese cycle org that has a route map for Shikoku and will also ask them. Are there a decent number of campgrounds with showers and is wild camping permitted? It would be nice to stay with Japanese hosts but it would also be helpful to have camping as an option.
@waddo
Жыл бұрын
We just finished the Shodoshima 88 temples which is much shorter (2 weeks) and more beautiful. We walked it. We have never done the Shikoku 88 but I am pretty sure there will be temples high up in the mountains with great hiking trails. Your choice would be use the very steep roads (pushing your bikes) that should exist for all or at least most; or leave your bikes and gear and hike up. This should be safe but there may be a string of temples at the top so you may be away for all the day. Forget campgrounds. There will be some but not really useful. Wild camping is probably illegal but choose your site wisely and try to be hidden. We never have trouble but as Yuki is Japanese she just chats with the locals who find us on their evening strolls. Onsen will keep you clean; or public toilets in empty parks you can strip off. Having said all that, I would do the Shodoshima 88 with your bikes and sometimes leave them to walk up the mountains. (It can be combined with the Shimaname Keido) The video should be uploaded in a couple of weeks so you can judge for yourself. Hope that helps.
@leigha6275

@@waddo Thank you for sharing - we'll look forward to your video and read up on Shodoshima. We're not averse to walking at all - we hike / backpack, cycle, sea kayak and ski and snowshoe. When we see a land route that interests us, we check if it's also possible by bike. Touring by bike can leave more time for exploring stops along the way. We loved Japan and can't wait to visit again and even consider living and working there for a period. Thank you again for your videos, they are truly beautiful and fun.

@@waddo Having just walked the Shodoshima 88, and being an experienced bike tourer, given a choice now would you recommend traveling by bike to the trailheads and hiking up to the temples instead of doing a fully walking trip? It's good to know you can stealth camp as we have good lightweight gear. It will also be nice to occasionally stay with locals to meet them.
@waddo
Жыл бұрын
@@leigha6275 I talked with Yuki about it and taking a bike would cause a problem sometimes: you may walk and do a string of temples but at some point you would have to go back for your bikes; whereas with no bikes you would just continue walking. On the other hand, with no bikes sometimes you are forced to take a bus because otherwise you walk the same very boring semi busy road over and over. If we were to do it again (which we will not!) we would not take bikes and we would cheat as we did taking the bus.
@leigha6275

@@waddo Thank you Keith and Yuki, that makes a lot of sense. Like you, we're practical over being purists. For example, if there's a long hiking path with nice scenery for most of the way but with a long busy and boring road section, we're doing to skip that section and take a bus or train.

We take our cameras but everything else is left inside. We do this for two weeks year after year and never had anything stolen or tampered with. So I think basically we can trust people.

+waddo thanks! Surly is reliable for long distance biking - Specialized bikes are good, too. Did you buy your bike here in Japan?
@waddo

Yes we bought them in Japan which means rip-off prices, especial;ly the surly.

Thank you for sharing your cycling tours. Just a small suggestions - would be great if you can have the name of the places you visited spelled out in your videos so that we can have clear references on the map.

You were watching a very old and bad video. The newer vids have animated maps with place names for each day. Also there are pdf guidebooks for the most recent.

Love the videos but where is the surly LHT?
@waddo
4 жыл бұрын
Depends which video you are watching. The early ones (alone) I used a mountain bike. After I met Yuki I bought the Surly. Yuki started with a Specialized which was truly junk and we had to throw it away. Finally she also got a Surly but the first trip was very hard because she was not strong enough to break well from the hoods and was too nervous to reach down to the drops. So going down mountains we had to stop every few hundred metres before her speed became too dangerous. You can see it in th Tokyo to Nagano video. When we got home we changed the drop bars to the mustachio which means we didnt need to change any of the break components so it was the cheaper solution.

Only cultures whoe's people ride on the left side of the road are very clever and intelligent just like mother England. Japan I think is a wonderful country, I must cycle there before I get too old.

Do they have mopeds or scooters to rent? Would love to see Japan's country side but too lazy to pedal a bike. You can see the girl's calf muscles getting more muscular as the short film progresses!

I never heard of scooters for rent. There are some very cheap car rentals though with small engines. In the old days I did similar trips with car rental.

How long "click" is in meters or kilometers?
@waddo
4 жыл бұрын
1 click is 1 km. It's a standard way of speaking in English because the word kilometre is too long.
@mikefranz1056

@@waddo Thx for your reply, good to know. However, to save syllables, use less military-specific and more vernacular "km" [keiem] or just say "key". And 50 "clicks" a day is too much for this girl - she is not that big nor conditioned enough. Every second day, it would be ok to recover, but not every day. And next time research on places you visit, share this ethnography, and showing up nude doesn't add much of attraction. It's just an opinion.
@waddo

@@mikefranz1056 Clicks is not military in the least. Everyone says it. As for the other things, I take your point but you are missing something: I started making videos before youtube existed and I make them for myself, to learn and improve my videography and editing skills and as a form of self expression. Oh, and for my love of music. So they are what they are. It would be a sad day indeed when I point the camera at my ugly face and make a "look at me" KZitem video. So they are what they are. As for the nudity, we like swimming naked and the human body is simply that. Asking an old hippy not to be naked is like asking a clown not to make jokes.

It is not so special even though it is supposed to be in the top 3 Japanese gardens. That's why I was surprised. As you can see in this video, the first one we visited is much much nicer; in fact it is the nicest garden I have ever seen.

They wake up VERY early. It was so hot there only early morning is almost ok. Maybe 6:30 they arrived. If you are bike camping, don't worry about it. People see a bike with helmet and a tent next to it and understand what is happening and that you will pack up and leave soon. We try to hide but if a place is too perfect we don't care and never had any problems. We even camping inside a castle!

No we have seen many people walking it as we ride by. The main problem is a large % of the time you have to walk on paths beside busy roads and also walk through long tunnels. A bad road for us can be finished in matter of minutes or a couple of hours; but for walkers it can take an entire day. Also who has that much free time to do the whole thing???
