We just met a couple from the USA who have cycled from Inverness along the glen and told us about the detour. We are doing some of this route in a few weeks so I was glad to find your video showing that the terrain doesn’t look too bad even if we do have a hill to climb! Any info re the diversion would be appreciated. 🚴♀️😊

Ah many thanks 🙏😀🚴.. yes if you just cycle the “Great Glen way” it’s very cyclist user friendly for sure .. quiet roads & user friendly gravel cycle paths make up the majority of the route from Inverness to Oban.. in regard to the diversion.. depending on which way you are travelling .. from my direction heading east to west it’s approximately 10 miles out of Fort Augustus.. it’s clearly marked on the Caledonian Canal .. easy enough o follow however it’s a little rough in places all be it only for a short part .. diversion no more than around 5-6 miles I guess… on another subject make sure both ferries are operating if you are planning on crossing Loch Linnhe.. if you cross and find the second ferry ⛴️ not operating it’s a few miles around to get back to fort William … they certainly should be operating but always worth confirming 👍🚴 enjoy it’s a grand route 🏴.. if you look to continue down to or start from Campbeltown then you’ll have the kintyre Peninsula to enjoy as well 👍🚴

Thanks for the reply! Sounds like we have made the right choice re which bikes to take! Our trip is Glasgow to Inverness via NCN 7, then down to Oban and a train back to Glasgow. Sadly we won’t have time for Kintyre this trip. ☹️

Great video, thanks for sharing and really informative. Im contemplating this at the end of August. Would you say its ok for a road e-bike? I can do gravel tracks ok fully laden with panniers I just don't fancy heavily rutted mountain bike style paths/tracks. It's just the Inverness to Fort William part Im concerned over as Im going onto the Ardnamurchan Peninsular and over to Mull then Oban, Kintyre then ferry to Arran all on road.

Ah thanks bud 👍🚴 yes you’ll be fine on a road bike .. the Caledonian canal path is wide and gravel top but not rutted .., I’d try run on some all season tyres if possible maybe the Continental 4 seasons .. unless your running tubeless .. Arran is absolutely fine & a good circuit quiet roads & the kintyre peninsula all good single road tracks but fine.. Mull is a good circuit on good surfaces was there in March 🏴 - safe cycling-

How many days was that? Did you do Inverness to Oban in a day? That’s a big day. Did you camp. Did well to carry on in that appalling weather. I have just done the Inverness to Fort William section. There are two pretty unpleasant diversions on it now. Surprised you managed with such thin tyres. It’s pretty rough in places. Would have liked to have seen your cycle around Arran as well. Could have done with more info such as ferrytimes, how many bikes do the ferries take and is it easy to get the bikes on. Info about wild camping, traffic, shops etc.

@@ShakerTomable Hi Bud 😀, I tend to mix it up a little between wild camp ⛺️- Air BB - if somewhere remote then it’ll be wild camp but for this route there’s a lot of options 👍 .. regarding the tyres 700x38 were bang on TBH - I run them tubeless which means I can drop the PSI down to 40 & still get a good roll on .. Arran is a great circuit and I have done that clockwise & anti clockwise 🔁.. & across the middle it’s not difficult but sure a little undulating in places around 135-140km .. in regard to ferry ⛴️ times the most up to date are always via the website “Cal Mac” & also join the twitters (X) feed as if the weather is poor a ferry could be cancelled it’s rare but possible - in all honesty you don’t really have to worry on the numbers for bikes on the ferries ⛴️- some ferries a minimal charge may apply often they are free you just book as a foot passenger & tick ✅ to state you are taking a bicycle 🚴.. I do personally always book my ferries in advance as I am very regimented in wanted to know I am definitively on board 👍 .. if you plan on taking a car with ya bike Always pre book your ferries ⛴️- ..the traffic has never really been an issue for me TBH .. but I ensure I stay away from the mass school holidays - ensure that you are visible ! Cycle with high quality lumen day lights - be it sunshine - cloud or otherwise .. the weather is always changeable & they’ll be shaded areas that you’ll be less visible without! .. there are shops sure.. but don’t be reliant upon them.. carry a micro cooker & titanium mug - ( Kraku is perfect) all in all no more than 260 grams .. very it all coffee all in one sachets & dry noodles weigh nothing … 🤔 as is always the case I could detail more within the video however most kinda want to get a general overview- hopefully I’ve provided some good tips for you - if you check out the Shetland Video I’ve detailed the bikepacking & wild camp set up in total you may find that beneficial- safe cycling out there - 🤞🚴 enjoy Now 😀
